The stud needs to go in the right depth, not a specific torque.
But if it won't go in far enough with 6 ft-lbs.... clean the threads.

you're not done yet. You have the side covers on the wrong side. The aluminum one you have on the starter side should be on the other side, it's way stronger than the Mag one.

Hey guys is it a bad idea to use a wire brush on the transmission case and the gear carrier case to clean it all up?

Thanks bigbore I appreciate the advice it’s been a big help for my rebuild. Most of what I’m learning during this rebuild I coming from the Bentley book and from what I can gleam from the OG transaxle builders.

Been out of town on the Great Trans Tool Expedition;
came back to the machinist having done some more fine work.. Cool

My first stab a welding a hub on *seems* to have gone OK.
Made sure to grind big relief for weld,
But could have done more to keep things cool.

Had the face surface ground - just enough to get it flat and clean it up.
Also clearanced for the hub as per Weddle.

See also chamfered oiling holes - later polished up a bit while chucked in the lathe to smooth any burrs and aid oiling.

The hub got faced equally each side to -just- clear two 091 snap-rings.

Hopefully, I'm doing this right.
Guess we'll find out here soon enough... Wink

if so I NEED friends like that. yep you need welding practice alright it will probley hold. So Iam guessing you are going to run early grears with a 091 shaft there are pro's and con's.

Ya, after looking at a few welded gears on here I decided to have a go at it.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Gave it three tacks and it was still cool enough you could handle the gear with bare hands.
Instead of shutting off the welder and letting it cool clear down,
I hit it with three more heavy tacks and blued it up a bit.
At that point you couldn’t hardly pick it up with regular gloves.

Still turns free on the shaft with a bearing - no lumpy.
Will do the next one with more patience..

Shaft is a 9-tooth regular splined Beetle.
091 snap ring trick is to help keep the hub from creeping under heavy load and taking away clearance for oil.

If I’m understanding it.. Embarassed

Other mods are to put the early gear on the late splined hub with later 002 slider.
Stop washer is thicker to work with later slider.
I had the hub pressed down tight to the washer before welding,
But it loosened -just- enough to turn with friction afterwards.
Hoping that’s still OK..

you could have used a later 002 gear they came welded from the factory. I was wondering about the shaft I didn't think you could put a 091 shaft in a 002.

Ok, yeah, i prattle on and on.. But here's a great story so I'll tell it!
And, come ON! How does this goofy TOAD end up with all those trans fixtures!?! Shocked
Certainly Mike isn't the only one who can appreciate this...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You guys can grasp what you're looking at here, right?
I'm still having trouble! Razz

Here's how it all started..

Since i've been pouring thru any/all transaxle builds anywhere,
This one came up as a stellar example:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=491932&highlight=transaxle
Decided to reach out to the author and see how his trans was doing ten years later,
And,
Since he had two of the VW 352 straps, maybe he'd sell me one?
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Turns out James is a super nice guy, his all aluminum ( badass/built ) 091/1 is still working perfectly, and he wouldn't mind selling me a tool or two.
Since i was driving my dear mother from Denver to Phoenix for the season, i had one day free in Phoenix.
Upon arriving, i was humbled to see a vehicle like this one.
Simply killer SVX conversion..
Check this out. Shocked

Still clean underneath after ten years.

Was so into geeking out on this Van that i didn't even notice what was on the bench.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

But then my heart sank... He certainly knew what he had.
Everything in the pile on the right is still available new special order from Snap On,
And James wanted to sell the whole lot.
Plus, he had current prices printed out and attached..
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Total for the parts still available was around $4700.
God only knows how much all that NLA stuff is worth.
Was thinking "Hey, at least i got to see all these tools live and in person"..
Before i left to see him I'd borrowed $200 from my Mom.
Also got $300 out of the cash machine on the way, and had $58 in my wallet.
I thought maybe he would sell me the 456a stand or the 352 strap? Maybe?
He just said "take it all".. Shocked
Needless to say, i was completely floored.

This is WAY more than what you really need to get through a few trans builds.
Plus, he even started digging out a few other things i might need..!
It was really hard to comprehend that it all was real and happening.
Was kind of floating, as a dream or something..
Hard to describe the feeling, like i won the lottery..

Anyways, i got it all home and tried to look up what these even are and how you use them.

Didn't want to ignore my dear mother during one of our rare visits,
but managed to try and squirrel away the stuff i'd need soonest in my suitcase and carry-on.

A few big things i packed in a dog-food box.

After a tense flight home wondering what they might seize or lose,
it all made it.
Yes, they opened and inspected it.. Wink

So,
Yeah..
Mr. James Pate kindly went and basically GAVE me everything to rebuild VW transaxles, especially Bus and Vanagon.

Already gearing up to do a couple for friends and pass the good will along..

The brotherhood takes care of it's own.
i'll try to be worthy and pay it forward.

If you wanted to use that measuring bar for any type of transaxle,
you can get a VW385/30 adjustable master gauge from Snap-On:

https://vw.snapon.com/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type...Suspension
It's only $619.48..! d'oh!

You won't need it if you buy the entire VW385 measuring set: Shocked

This is why I love VWs. “The Brotherhood” and the generosity of people helping people. Now back to more technical stuff I don’t understand Wink
