While it’s nice to have an idea of what you are going to spend on all aspects of getting a VW back on the road, a full body off restoration is getting mixed in with a dormant vehicle recommissioning. Simply putting brakes on, and cleaning the fuel tank of a complete car is a fraction of the cost of a full restoration.

I'm roughly 15k into my '63 Vert project including buying the bare body and a parts vert for the frame and drivetrain. I only fixed the bad areas on the body, blended in base coat, then shot clear over it so I didn't have the costs of doing full body/paint. I still have to spend ~4k on a top, 1k on Firestone whitewall tires to go back with stock wheels, and I need to find some parts to redo the engine tin with the correct '63 pieces.
