So, I redid most of the rear axle today - all new CV joints, all new bearings. Watching a real mechanic do it in 20 minutes on youtube is insane - it took me all day and I’m exhausted!!!
When the job was done and I was going through torquing the final triple square bolts and I noticed that I had let the inner race of the outer bearing on one wheel slip out.
I thought I could just wiggle it back in - but alas - no luck. Is there a trick to get this little guy back in, or do I need to pull the whole axle again? I really don’t want to pull it - its just such a filthy awful job…. I though I might be able to find a pipe and tap it in?
Any thoughts from all you guys who have done this so many times you can actually get it done in an hour? _________________ ‘87 2WD 2.1L Westy

Pull the race all the way out and look in, push the rollers back into place as required, re-insert the center race.
You might have to carefully pull the seal out.
Probably need to make a special shaped (thick) wire hook but they can be pulled out. _________________

Watching some "real" mechanic on you tube remove/install a part that has been already been removed and re-installed recently is watching an actor who has their scene scripted and ready to film with everything ready to produce a show...not real life where the parts are being removed for the first time since they were installed at the factory 30+ years ago.
Yes the actor is a real mechanic, but they rehearsed their job over years of handling tools so he/she knows what works. It still goes much easier when the part is prepped for the show and that is okay because it is a visual tool for learning how to do it. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Removal distorts them.
How did you torque the CV bolts without a wheel on to prevent rotation |
Worthy to understand that the seal’s internal metal structure is soft, mild steel, weak, easy to bend. But when freshly installed often the grease on the outside rubber lets them “ooze” out if you pull slowly. I've removed new seals without distortion.
Go around and around.
With luck & caution they can be re-used.
If it looks perfect (and circular too!) it will do its Job.
^^Dave^^ often cautions that new mechanics can’t do what experience can. But its not rocket scientology here, nor a danger on the road.
This is how experience is gained. 👍🏽👍🏽
Van-in-gear easily holds the CVs against the 33ft (or 36?) ft-lbs bolt torque.
Dave are you thinking of the 360 ft-lbs of the large castellated nut? _________________

Thanks for all the input. As is said over and over here, if the job is worth doing, its worth doing right. I'm going to remove that axle, disconnect the CV's and get that bearing seated correctly by reassembling it completely. If I disassemble completely, I can remove the stub shaft out the back without damaging the seals and then gently slide it back in (with a big hammer) while trying to keep that inner race in place.
I'm pretty certain that that will be the epitome of greasy fun!!!
As far as torquing. Excellent question. I could do the passenger side (poorly) by putting a spacer in between the hub nut and holding the hub nut with a big wrench between my knees. Intensely awkward. That let me get up to the 35 ft-lbs on two bolts and then I gave up. When I have wheels back on I will definitely retorque all of the bolts.
The driver side spins the other way, so that method did not work at all. I tried a few ideas, like holding the axle with a pipe wrench and wrapping a rag around the spline shaft. nothing seemed like it would work well without damaging things. That one is untorqued until I get wheels on later this week. _________________ ‘87 2WD 2.1L Westy

while I wouldn't really ever install the CVs and axles w/o the tires on.
you can slip the hub on the splines then put a wheel on 2-3 lugs and hold that between your knees to restrain the 35#s.
but nothing like doing it all again to seat it in memory. _________________

just an update - it took about ten minutes to pull the axle, pop the stub out of the hub, poke the bearing back in and completely reassemble!
Thanks for all the suggestions. Now on to installing the Burley Rear Brake Kit!! _________________ ‘87 2WD 2.1L Westy
