Looks like your engine started out as an April 1966 1300cc engine. No telling what it is now.
You are missing a case nut. Look this engine over carefully and post lots of pictures. Could be other things that need attention.

So, here we go..
I got myself the Bentley Publishers manual for the beetle..
Reading through it, my beetle should have a Solex 30PICT-3 carb, however what's installed is a brazilian made H30/31 PICT..
Are the adjustment prcedures the same as for the 30PICT ?

So it begins..
Decided to tackle the brakes first, since the pedal goes almost all the way to the floor before any braking happens...
Front is already upgraded to discs, and the pads are almost new, so all good there.
Rear brakes :
Had a hell of a time getting the 36mm nut off, broke a 1/2 breaker bar in the process...
And did not get the nut off...
So I decided to bite the bullet and spend the $$ for a device named "torquemeister".. pricey at $120, but worth every penny.
With this thing the nut came of in a matter of seconds..
It also can be used to remove and torque the big nut on the engine flywheel
Brakes don't look to bad, but totally out of adjustment.
I will replace the shoes, hardware, and cylinders anyway, for peace of mind.
