As you might know, many of the parts on the Brazilian buses are specific to the Brazilian split windows. One of them is the steering gear box. I have had great luck ordering from www.vwantigo.com. They can message back and forth in English to answer your questions. Large freight charges on parts from Brazil? Yesseree Bob, but at least you can get them. The parts prices themselves have always been fair.

School us unknowing the difference in the steering boxes. Why a german box won't work in a Brazilian. Just curious. Bolt pattern, fitment issue. Seems a german one should work? |

Nothing about them seems the same. The Brazilian boxes have an electronic component. I can't give you specifics on the other differences (the Bus is off to it's owner), just that when compared, the German units will not interchange.
Best regards,

Jim - I am having the same problem. My father-in-law just acquired a 1995 Brazilian Bay Window Kombi. It has a worn steering gearbox and I am helping him find a replacement. The one we ordered in the US did not fit. The casting that connected to the steering column seemed to be about two inches short. So, now I am looking for a Brazilian source to make sure we get the right part. As a result of this post, I have emailed VW Antigo.
Do you have any other recommendations for parts suppliers or even an original owner's manual for a 1995 Kombi?
Thank you |

An excellent source in Brazil is VW Antigo. They have a web site, but it's in Portuguese! They communicate well in English from the message portion on their site (Contacto). They are very reasonable and quick to ship. They accept PayPal. The steering gear box I ordered came in less than 3 weeks and it fit perfectly. |
