Well you know how it goes. I got a fever and the only prescription is more beetles. My first build, Forrest Forrest Gump is in my signature. I documented that whole build on the Samba. For Lt. Dan (named thus because as my friend (samba member dsliman) said "he was missing a few parts"), I'm just posting some random pics.

This time I really went all out to build a daily driver I could really use all the time. I'm not documenting the entire build here but just posting some eye candy for the membership. My goal is to get it done in time for Florida Bug Jam in November. It will be very close timing but there is a chance I can get it done.

Engine is a Jake Raby built 2320cc type 4, bespoke type 1 tranny by Matt Steedle Transmissions LLC, Tangerine Racing exhaust, 4 wheel discs, Topline front suspension, Porsche rims and steering wheel, Gilmore A/C, push to start, etc. Enjoy the beetle porn:

Great Build. I am currently installing the same Stiffy Bar on my 1979 but I had to widen body access holes at the top shock bolt location and put a bunch of washers and use a 100mm long bolt to get it to fit. To get the body to drop over it installed will require a lot of cutting. Its been a project in itself to get it installed, but it looks awesome, to bad its hidden.

Yes I've been scratching my head over that. I realize I have to take the bolt out of the shock mount and re-install that bolt but will be a bit disappointed if I have to cut sheet metal now that the body is all painted up. will post pic of that when I get to it. The body is supposed to be returned by the painter this week.

Its a 944 steering wheel. The rims are from a Boxster.

The color is a BMW color called Olivine Green Metallic. I was going for "pewter". I think I nailed it. My parents had a caddy this color back in the 70's

Will post a pic of the horn button in a bit.

some more pics

The dash was covered in leather, I got this kit from ebay.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Where the radio normally goes I have a bluetooth stereo controller, USB and audio, seat heater controls (no heat exchangers on this racing exhaust) then digital guages, one for CHT and one for oil (temp and press). Will post photos of the gauges in action after the car is running. The window defrosters are changed to mount tweeters. The seats are from a Fiero and covered in TMI grey VW fabric with basketweave inserts and the speakers are in the headrests.

If you zoom in on the speedo you can see the EGR and AT fluid lights have been repurposed, one says FAN to indicate power at the oil cooler fan and one is labelled SHIFT for the digital tach shift light.

The dash is reflocked - kit from amazon:

The dash was cut for original VW air vents. I guess these were dealer installed, I have adapted them to work with the gilmore a/c system. I didnt want the generic vents attached under the dash.

The clock was gutted and a digital tach install in its case. Will include shift light and buzzer.

The porsche 944 wheel with the horn button attached and early wolfsburg crest installed. The wheel was rebuilt and recovered by redline. I painted the horn button and put the hood crest emblem on that myself.

fair warning for any passengers:

Here is what the Clearing looked like prior to cleaning it up. Not pretty.

Thanks for pics. If you look carefully I actually clearanced my brackets a bit so hopefully won’t have to cut the body. This was suggested online somewhere.

I did notice that. If you could update the install with photos that would be awesome. I would love to see how much difference the clearance work did.

hopefully mating the body to pan sometime in october will update with photos then.

I also had to make a bit of an extension on one of the stiffy bar attachement where it meets the right transmission 17mm bolt. In the stock position it interfered with the tangerine exhaust. He had warned me about that in advance. I made a metal plate about 3" oval with two 18mm holes to kick the stiffy teardrop bracket out about an inch and now it clears the exhaust. Will try to post picks.

looking at the width of the rear track I'm thinking Lt. Dan's nickname should be "Mr. Beefy" Laughing

The dash layout and look is slick! Very thoughtful build. That wide contact patch is going to come in handy with that engine. Cool
