My O2 sensor plug thread looks slight smaller than a 20mm x 1.5 so 18 must be it. |

Here's my two old go-to tools, as Dan noted, 18mm x 1.50mm thread.
There are other O2 sensor threads out there, but thankfully we don't use them, so these dead common tools are easier to find.
Chaser if the space is tight, and actual tap if the threads won't work with the chaser due to damage or rust. Tap needs way more room though to work...

My O2 port's threads are damaged after removing the sensor. I've never used a tap before, but plan to pick one up from a FLAPS to cope. From the looks of things, I'll also need to buy a handle for it, correct?
I've done some web searches and it looks pretty straightforward (use oil, carefully start the tool to ensure correct, perpendicular cutting, after partial-turn resistance, turn backward before continuing, etc.). Since space is tight, I'm wondering if anyone was able to use a tap + handle in the same scenario.
Mostly, I'm looking for TheSamba to feed me optimistic feedback, success stories, etc. ;^) |

Ideally, yes. But I have also used a wrench or 8-point socket when swing room was limited or ratcheting was useful. |

I can’t seem to get the tap started because the top threads are gone and it won’t catch on the bottom. There isn’t enough room to use a handle to exert downward pressure. Do I have any other options? |

Slowly turn the tap with a wrench while you tap LIGHTLY on the end of the tap with a hammer. Removing the exhaust might be in order. |

Are you using a tapered tap? they are best for "finding" lost threads lower in the hole, proceed with caution... _________________ "Olive" a '60 Ragtop Beetle

Yes, and thanks to Wildthings’ tip to tap the top of the tap, I was able to cut new threads. With the tin shield removed, I had just enough room. I then used a magnet to get the shavings out. |
