https://www.mecum.com/lots/LN1021-467969/1965-volkswagen-type-ii-bus/
A member asked me if I knew anything about this Bus and if it was a real 21-Window as no M-code or proof are provided.
I did not know anything but in the auction text it says
Custom roof conversion
I feel this was easy to miss and I assume that means it is a conversion.
It looks really nice otherwise, although I do see some typical strange and/or missing parts, for example:
2-tone wheels with no trim rings
Heater knob and maybe mechanism too are missing from underneath the driver seat
Headliner might be cloth and not vinyl?
No pedal pan
Rear bumper looks misaligned in some photos
Steering column painted Beige Grey instead of black
Middle seat grab handles are installed wrong or don't fit right
I decided to start a thread in case anyone else sees anything else "off" about the Bus _________________ How to Post Photos

The rear bumper should be pointed- not a chisel, no?
The passenger headlight is a bug unit with a bus driver's side ring installed (drain hole pointing up).
Minutia perhaps- but when it's a high dollar resto for high payoff things probably could have been addressed earlier. _________________

Early style handle, should be a flat folding style.
Spacer for the carb instead of governor.
12v conversion
15 inch wheels
Shitty Wolfsburgwest repro radio delete plate
No splash pan
Underside painted instead of left in primer
Went repro rear bumper as noted

Not a problem with the bus per se, but shiny classic in an industrial complex is a huge red flag for me, It's quite obvious this one was created solely for profit. I want to buy from an owner thats had the car a while, been on trips with it, etc. |

It would have taken all of 2 minutes with a spatula to make all those pop out windows seal effectively. _________________

I'd think a deluxe should have a white column, not black.
The bracket for column to dash is white, it should be black.
extra hole left side of pod
a 65 should have mesh grey interior, not mesh platinum
spare tire cover should be the basketweave vinyl no beading, not smooth vinyl with beading. ( this is picky I know)
where's the pic of the rear carpet showing the spare tire cover snapped in place?
I think 65 was a split year for rear bumper, so slant for early 65, pointy is for late 65
should have grease on brake cables where they go round the bend under the front floor
Is the bumper trim straight?
looks like there's no beading on middle seat kick panel
I like the black covers for the rear axle tube. and the red body there where the spring plates bolt on.
T series key (correct)
has vinyl on parcel tray
correct cab door handle orientation
side pic of sunroof folded nicely _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

I keep noticing small things:
Black fill-in on the hubcap logos is a little later than should be.
The engine vents lack chrome strips. _________________

Weren’t the chrome strips only on outie vents? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Thanks for the correction, I did mean the bracket but left off the word "Bracket".
I was surprised at the parcel tray vinyl too, that is often missed, even on top level restorations. _________________ How to Post Photos

No vent strips are ok - that's only an earlier Bus outie vent thing.
You are correct on the painted hubcaps of course.
I missed that it had 15" wheels too, as someone else noted _________________ How to Post Photos

Shouldn't there be dash tabs to latch the safaris?
Edit:
- No heater tube insulation
- No brake reservoir cover in front floor board
- No grommet on accelerator pushrod
- No rear hatch alignment guides (wedges)
What's with the radio speaker (wiring) hole in the A-pillar?

what do you think: are those safari windows original ones?
The v-shaped lower profile looks like they are original ones. But after the bus is a fake 21 I would have assumed that the safari windows were added later too. |

Carburetor pre-heat on the wrong side for 65. They also list the engine as "1600 dual port" wonder if they meant dual relief? |

I don't know. I clicked on the link posted above and it said I had to put a log into it or something to see the selling price. |

That’s a lot of money for a fake, but then real ones are going for $150k plus. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

That's insane!
I won't sell my original 21. And she will get a proper vinyl for the parcel tray, too these days
Those prices are disturbing though. I thought they were falling a bit recently. But it seems not, as even a fake fetches a lot more than 100K.
I used to drive her as a daily driver. That seems almost impossible nowadays, which is somewhat sad... |
