I was cleaning up the back room of the barn because one of these days it will be cold and that room isn't heated. I've had this old 36hp motor for years and today decided to check it out. It turned over and except for the missing distributer guts, looked complete. Pulled a valve cover and found one exhaust valve sticking out farther than the rest. So, just how many miles did this motor travel while tossing the exhaust valve head around? It looks as if it traveled through the piston several times. It even twisted the rod. Just thought I'd throw in how to waste a couple of hours in the world of VW's.

I would not consider your tear-down time as "wasted". You may have put the time to better use on an active project, but sometimes you need a short diversion. Your disassembly enables you to plan more brief single-task diversions on this poor engine, whether to clean up the heads as well as the entire engine, take the damaged head apart to assess rebuildability, searching for replacement parts, fixing those heads' missing/broken exhaust studs, etc.

Whenever I find myself needing space I break down old core engines or transmissions, and clean whatever hardware is salvageable. Often I find damage or previous bodged repairs that make me laugh out loud.

For those interested, that plug in the engine is the super rare 25% more horse power "FIRE INJECTOR H7E". Unfortunately only three of them can be salvaged.

But on another note, Digging through the pile I did find a '55 bus short block that is looking like it might be salvageable.

Is that -20-0758027 ?

This is from almost the end of March, 1954.

Nice find!
You could sell this very easily to someone with a '54 Barndoor Bus
