2276 engine in sig.
WOT is fine, but under light load (40%TPS) when slowly accelerating, 3000-3200rpm I'm getting pinging/detonation that I can't seem to shake.
I added fuel and took out 5º of timing across the whole area.

Current 28º at WOT and 34º where it's pinging.

I need to verify with the timing light just to make sure nothing is wonky there..

If it was a fuel/compression issue would it be more prevalent at higher loads?

Seems odd. Maybe you are hearing something else, cracked piston, rocker arm loose, end play in the cooling fan/generator, throw out bearing. Something like that?

All of those would be infinitely more apparent at WOT though right?
You may be right, would also explain why no timing/fueling adjustments seem to be making any difference.

Luke,
you would think so , but thats not always the case, sometimes the heavier loading quiet things up. but under light load allows things to move... make noise. had a guy recently who broke the 2nd ring land on a piston... under heavy load... sounded normal... under light load or idle.... clanging and banging.

Well, I don't like stories like that Very Happy

We're having a bit of a fuel issue here in the UK at the minute, not been able to get shell v power for some time, been running 'equivalent' from other garages but I guess that might not be helping.

Who knows it could be the fuel.

I always use Shell V-Power as well.

I've tweaked the trigger offset a little.
It was 52° but 55° gets me closer to bang on what the pulley says is TDC (I verified when I built the engine)

So that means I was 32° wot and over 40° at cruise.

Could that be enough to cause it?

40 on cruise is pushing it, especially on 95 octane. It will most likely not appreciate more than about 30 & 38.
What is your map in the trouble area at 40% throttle?

I can empathize - any carb to manifold or manfold to head vacuum leaks?

I had a 1776 once that ran great at first but then the Dellorto manifolds (or the head joint itself) developed some nasty warpage and due to the lean condition the bug would ping no matter what gas I ran.

Back then I didn't know what the heck a vacuum leak was and never bothered to investigate. Only later did someone find the problem for me.

Good luck and I hope you get it resolved - Ted

I pulled 5° out. So it was around 37° cruise
Map is 95-97kPa
AFR 13.8

Now I've tweaked the trigger offset and pulled a little more out. Around 30-33 cruise and 26 wot. Yet to be road tested though.

It's currently drinking Jet Ultra which is a 97 octane e5

It's a fair call, and certainly one I shall investigate.
I would expect to see it in the data logs though tbh.

Just been for a drive, couldn't replicate the pinging at all.

Similar situations as before, 3000rpm increasing with 35%TPS, 95kPa, 14:1 AFR
Total timing 29.7°

So whether it's the cam, the CR or the coating I don't know, but this engine has 10° less timing at cruise and 8° less at WOT. With no loss in butt dyno numbers Smile
That's 24° and 30° now.

95-97 Kpa is just about atmospheric pressure. At that point the advance should be 0 and the system running on the base map only, You don´t want the advance to begin to kick in until about 92 Kpa.
No wonder its pinging on less octane.

On MS there's aren't two separate spark tables, it's just one 12x12 matrix, load up the side and rpm at the bottom.
Atmospheric according to the ecu is 101.3kPa...
I agree, there isn't a whole load of resolution there though.

Yes, but what does the system say at WOT? Probably something like 98 Kpa.
While I am no fan of MS the 12x12 ignition map is more than sufficient for a N/A engine, - provided your map sensor has a decent load range.

Also, are you running open or closed loop?

Are you adjusting the trigger offset at idle with the timing gun and have the the table fixed at 10° ?

You shouldn't have to keep adjusting it. Have it match what the timing says by adjusting the offset to match the 10° then leave it alone.

A bit of both, it's been open all night this time as AFR seems pretty good.

100.2kPa, dropping to 97.3 by the time we hit 6500rpm

I am running 87 octane, 8.4/1, C/R, 31* total and 41* part throttle advance. No pinging anywhere in the load or RPM range. AFR is low 13s at full throttle and mid 15s at cruise.

Something seems odd to me…

I set fixed timing to 0, and then adjusted offset to get tdc bang on. No idea how or why I was a few degrees off but I haven't changed that for years.
So it's been off all this time.
