The Bentley specifies the distance from the end of the torsion tube to the start of the needle bearing as 0.276". I drove in the bearing till it bottomed out and the distance was closer to 7/16, 0.4375". Is this an issue where I have to pull the bearing back out or can I leave it as is? Thanks in advance!

Possibly dumb question, but did you remove the seal carrier (13) prior to measuring?

Looks like a lower, lucky. Install the torsion leaves and the lower arm with their grub screws, and discern if the rollers supporting the arm 100%. You can measure the depth of the trailing arm shoulder and compare.
You'll likely have to destroy that bearing to get it out, unless there's a hidden gap I can't see in the photo.
Just curious, have you seated or removed any other bearings with/without issues?

I致e removed all 4 bearings with no issues. I removed them awhile ago and can稚 seem to find the picture I took of them to compare then vs now.
This is the only bearing I installed before I stopped. It went in easy with the correct size punch.
It is the lower but why would that be lucky? |

Check the three other tube ends and see what marks they may have showing how far in the original bearings were installed.
I am guessing the VW left a space between the bearing and the step in the bore solely for the purpose off making it possible to pull the bearing with a puller. Operation wise, so long as the bearing runs against the proper machined area of the torsion arm shaft, it is probably okay to run with it as is. |

The lower is much easier to install by hand, especially if the torsion leaves have splayed out. I assumed you'd be installing new leaves if you're going this deep. If not, the wear marks on the arm will show what kind of tolerance you're working with. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

The beam is completely out of the bus. I am only replacing one leaf because it was broke. The other leaf is just being cleaned up, re-greased and put back in.
Thanks! |

Thanks for the advice! I checked the other tubes and could slightly see where the other bearings sat and it was much closer to the 0.276" found in the manual. Installed the other 3 bearings at that depth no problem. Tried to pull the other one out and completely destroyed it. I had pulled the original bearings out the same way and didn't dent a single bearing, so this makes me think the newer reproductions are much softer.
Thanks again! |
