I'm replacing a leaking main seal on my 74 Thing. While I have the engine out what else should I replace? Clutch? Transmission seal? What parts are required?

There is a graphite o-ring that goes along with the main seal. Part # 311 105 295A. If the throwout bearing feels chunky or gritty replace it, otherwise they last a long time if you don't overuse the clutch.

Replace the o-ring any time you take the flywheel off the crank. It should go in dry, to a completely cleaned out grooved.

Before removing the pressure plate, mark its orientation so it goes back on in the same place for balance. Same with the flywheel; a hammer and centering punch works well to make dots on flywheels, pressure place, and crankshaft dowel pins.

If the transaxle input seal is dry, I don't usually replace it. Check the transmission/motor mounts for cracks, and the throwout arm for hairline fissures.

Good luck!
Robbie

Throwout bearing
Seal between the engine and body
Rear tranny mounts
Use foil tape to seal up gaps in tin around the oil cooler doghouse
Tranny input shaft seal
Fuel hose between hardline in frame for engine
Double check tail light wiring before reinstalling the engine
