I saw an ad for this Chimp about 15 years ago when I was searching for a Burro. The ad said there was race history. At the time I didn’t think much of it. Then a few years ago while researching Goldi, I was looking though the Peterson archives and saw it again and saved the images. Then yesterday Nelson Sparks posted up pictures of it and after talking to him, it turned out to be the same car. I felt like I had to grab it inorder to save it. I was afraid whoever bought it would take the rims off and pull the motor and junk the rest. I have no idea what to do with it, but at least it didn’t get crushed. I think it should be preserved but made mechanically sound. It’s so close to the way it was in 1968.
I wondering if anyone recognize it or knows anything about it.
Thanks Doran

Looks like one of the home made hunting rigs we'd see in the mountains of NorCal. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

I have the plans to build a EMPI Sportser, very similar to that.

Chimp, like this one is the 1st VW-based offroad buggy. They were built by Scott McKenzie, who was later responsible for building and prepping the Sandmaster offroad race cars, and Malcolm Smith's famous ISS sponsored Funco SS2 buggy that won the Baja 1000 repeatedly, along with so many other offroad races. Scott built somewhere around 12 of these cars. They are based on a shortened VW pan. Chimps were the inspiration for the later EMPI Sportster, the Burro, the Peppertree Automotive 'Rivets', and eventually the Meyers' Manx and all the fiberglass buggies that spun off from the Manx.
It's the ORIGINAL deal.
One of my friends has a Chimp that' I've done a LOT of work on. I would LOVE to buy this Chimp here, but the boss says I have way too many projects and toys already.

Came across an article in a January 69 issue of "Wheel World" about the building of a "Chimp" from a Scott McKenzie produced kit. I have wondered how nearly identical Chimps were built by various people. I didn't believe they could have been built free hand unless there were complex drawings and plans which I've never come across. The article confirms Mckenzie sold kits which builders assembled onto a VW chassis(the car in the article took the owner over four months). The article also confirms the Chimp was still being built as late as 1969. I'll need to get the images reduced in size to post them on TheSamba. In themean time, I posted it on the Facebook Burro page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/255034918236205 |
