Remove the bumper so you have access to the parts, wire wheel, rust converter, rustoleum paint, fluid film or waxoyl/cosmoline.

Those Vise-grips are good for another 100K.

Nice work. That engine will just hop right in now!

To try and answer your question, I'd say yes to wire wheel, top coat of your choice at part bumper mounts to.

My '81 has bad rust perforation in engine bay metal under area bumper rail slides in. This might be what dobryan is getting at but maybe Fluid Film or similar sprayed into bumper rail tube would creep and protect areas nearby.

Caveat: Fluid Film creeps REALLY well. e.g. past a body seam seal and onto paint.

Enjoying your thread.

Neil.

How do I clean the power steering fittings? Is there a coating/paint, or is it just brass and I can wirewheel it to make it shiny?

That's a cadmium plating over steel.

Tub-O-Towels is your friend here. A wire wheel will make anything look great temporally. Like paint work, start with the mildest solution 1st then go up as needed. If the parts are off the car and free in hand, brake clean aerosol followed by a blast of compressed right after, works fine. Don't let parts have Brake Clean on them for long, I'm talking a few seconds. If you have the time and patience, diluted Simple Green and a nylon brush is the solution that can't go wrong.

Don't leave undiluted Simple Green on cadmium plating for too long, or it will dull and stain the finish. I've done this far too many times.

Thanks for the tips. I'll be gentle then.

Here is another one, less fun:

I was cleaning the stalk assembly when bzoing, the wiper stalk component let his minions run free:

Any idea, diagram, video, on how to reassemble these buggers?

(this was brought to you by the "If it ain't broke, dont fix it" and "I told you so" folks)

The plastic plunger goes horizontally, the contacts go on the bottom. That's not gonna be fun to put back in place, you must have forced down on the lever at some point to pop these out.... The lever is riveted making things hard to put back in place. I did it years ago, I can't remember exactly what little part goes where but it's fairly obvious.

Vicvan: not sure this would help but if you want, I can post close up images of my spare wiper stalk (s?). Don't know what year they're for though.

I think I see where the thingies go, but yeah it's going to be a pain... I'll call local veedub garages to see if they have any old ones laying around.

Neil, thanks for the offer, but I don't think it'll help. When the assembly is properly assembled, you can't really see hese small parts.

Alika, you did, so it's not impossible! I'll give it a shot, who knows.

I have a new one from CIP1. It came apart on me and CIP1 sent me a replacement that I used. It's together except for that little H or n metal piece.

Any ideas on what to do with the crate? A fort? Trailer?

So, my TiiCo crate from South Africa became our back yard Leaf Compost box Smile

I just put a couple hinges on the top and a handle, drilled a couple holes and it does a great job.

Damn that's a beauty of a motor.

Unable to fix the wiper stalk. Ordered one at Dr Bjorn.

What's this? Vacuum tube, going from the brake pedal to the engine compartment, right side. Can I get rid of it? I'd like to reuse the hole behind the dash (passenger side, as seen on the second picture) to pass the FAS harness.
