A question to the brake experts on The Samba:
Could a 1968-1969 master cylinder work on a 1967 bus? Any other years?
What would have to be changed/modified, if so? Fittings, lines, etc?
I cannot find a German made master cylinder for a 1967. Reproductions, but not the better quality product.
As always, thanks for your help!! _________________ SLOW RIDE........TAKE IT EASY!!!

Just because it says made in Germany dose not mean it is. Most likely produced somewhere in the world and crated to Germany. It is then given it's final packaging and labeling to be shipped out.
The rules are pretty vague on what "Made In" actually is. In the bicycle industry Made In the USA could be a fully welded and machined frame delivered to a US company for paint, stickers, final parts assembly and packaging.
I have been running white box China brake parts for the last 20 years with no issues. The only thing I did before install was a final inspection, cleaning and reassembly. |

The rules aren't vague and companies can be sanctioned for not labeling correctly. "Made in" is different than "Assembled in."

bus depot lists ATE brand but it's pricy. https://www.busdepot.com/211611011q
you can rebuild yours. if you buy the chinese one, get it from rock auto at $48. I would take it apart and clean / lube it. |

Problem is the 1968-69 MC requires a different brake fluid set of reservoirs, and tubing between is not like a beetle.
The 1971-79 bus MC will accept the 1967 only bus reservoir or the rabbit one. With no tubing required. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Glad to help.
Diagram below shows both versions of the 1968-70 bus MC reservoirs (1&2) with upper mini reservoirs (5&6):
Highly recommend you dig deeply into the "Split Bus FAQ and How Tos - *Read before posting*" up at the top of the split bus forum. That has a ton of specific need to know info concentrated in it. Amongst all in there is a thread about installing the 1971-79 bus MC. Enjoy! _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
