Hi, I would like to introduce my Karmanna Ghia to you:
-born in 1962
-engine 1200
-manual gearbox 4.
I've had it for 4/5 years. Brought from the USA of Washington through the Netherlands to Poland Smile
Condition for renovation.Big plans at the beginning, then moments of doubt, a few sales attempts, indecision, etc.
Now I have a surge of desire again.
The general plan is as follows:
-airride
-sheet metal work and painting
-more powerful engine

Immediately after the purchase, I started the renovation, then it steel until 2 years maybe 3 Smile)

Welcome Dariusz, it looks like you are on the way to building a very nice Ghia. Many here have been in the same position as you but have pushed on to completion. You will have a lot of help and advice here from experienced people. Keep your post updated with photos of your work, we all learn from each other! I look forward to following your work.

Typical Ghia damage and crappy repairs. You just have to laugh when you find that stuff otherwise you’ll cry.

Such repairs do not deter me at all. My lack of patience is that it takes so long Smile Unfortunately, parts in PL are quite expensive and it inhibits me. That's why I wanted to sell, but I know I'd be disappointed. I think once I started I have to finish it Smile

Nice work. What are your plans for the rest of that front left fender? And where did you source those lamp rings. Metal or fiberglass. I'm watching closely only because I will be going down the same road with my '65.

The good news for you is that you are right next door to the best sources of quality Ghia parts and repair panels - Germany. A handful of suppliers there.

Unfortunately, the euro rate and shipping make it cheaper for me to buy in Poland. The parts are the same. I can handle Smile

I bought everything in the Garbusy.pl store, the fender will be heated with a burner and tapped until the effect is satisfactory. Nothing else can come up.

Another update after today's work at Ghia Smile

The ripples look quite bad. I had a similar problem with my Karmann built 356C. The photo shows how it was fixed with new metal inserted where the most serious damage occurred. Maybe you could save time this way too.

Nicholas, did you fabricate that piece (wow), or did you use an existing donor clip?

I remember some guys using a certain type of grinding(?) or shrinking disc that helps work and shrink the metal in this condition, would something like that help him? If someone has the link where this was discussed, perhaps you can post for Dariusz.

This was a new piece of metal inserted. Since the area is uncomplicated and without seams it was deemed better to insert a metal patch rather than spend hours working the area and never getting a good result. The boundary of the wheel arch, headlight bucket and top seam remained original and untouched.
I don't recall exactly what metal was inserted, but you can choose new material of similar thickness or cut pieces from donor VW cars. Doors, rooves and trunk lids are good choices. When you choose the donor car, be careful to not cause outrage to the fanboys. We don't want to upset the bus brigade, beetle boys or Type Threesomes. Laughing

After today I think the fender is not a problem. I don't know how to go about it. I hope I can handle it. I wonder whether to buy ready-made parts or let someone make them from sheet metal?

They sell all that stuff, it’s structural so I wouldn’t cut corners.

I hope you measured the left headlamp repair panel carefully. You need to get it positioned correctly so that the left and right edges of the opening go straight across the car, perpendicular to the front to rear centerline. You can't have the panel "tilted" inwards when viewed from above and looking straight down.

Same with the alignment as seen from the side. The panel has to be purely vertical, and not tilted upwards or downwards. You can measure the body from the door sill so that it's parallel to the ground. Then measure 90 degrees up from the ground (right angle) and position the panel to match that line. Looks like I'm too late with this comment, since you've tacked and fully welded the panel onto the fender.

You've already done good work on the floor pans, so that the rust repair on the rockers will be within your ability.

I measured everything exactly, the right side is original and I followed it. Maybe I took the photo so that it looks bad.

I had to make a pair of these supports. I've never seen them with holes though? I presume the holes are to drain water away??
