Reading through the progressive refinements and searching through some old posts, I've come close to figuring out what I need but still have questions..
My car is October of 52. According to progressive refinements the "Tee" style filter was replaced by an oil bath filter in August of 52. Then in September 52, assuming to coincide with the beginning of Zwitter production, it is an oil bath with 2 annular grooves on the bottom. Then January 53 is the start of the top strap oil bath filter. Can anyone provide a pic of the early, pre single strap air filter? I found mention that it might have a single wing nut on top, and that it might be labeled "Mann' but nothing definitive.
Happy thanksgiving, SD

if you look in the technical section at the owner's manuals for 1952 - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type1.php - if you look at the french one, october, it has a photo of the strapless oil bath filter (page 18?) with wing nut. interestingly the december ones show a strap filter...

a lot of the US import zwitters were equiped with the cyclone air filter. my understanding is that it was a common "upgrade" for hoffman imports. could be worth getting a birth cert if you havent done so yet. they look cool too.

The wingnut oil bath air filter was improved by having two raised rings pressed into the floor of the oil reservoir, to stiffen it. The floor of the reservoir appears to be double-walled, so the pressed rings are not visible from the outside. The same rings remain on the early strap-top oil bath air cleaner. I'm pretty sure I also saw pics of all this somewhere on this site, years ago.

I observe this stamped into the air cleaner tops:

Early wingnut, flat floor oil reservoir: "VW" "Knecht" "LB 602"
Early strap-top, ring stampings: "VW" "Knecht" "LB 602/1"

I cannot confirm how the "Late wingnut, with ring stampings" air cleaner would be stamped.

Thank you Everett, missed that as it's in the 58-67 forum. Many thanks to all for the info.
