I am needing to replace my oil filler tube assembly on a 68 beetle. While searching through the classifieds, I am seeing 3 different variations of this assembly. Can anyone explain to me why one would be needed over another?
the first variation is the tube that goes straight down with no bends / turns.
the second variation is the same as the first, but the tube is a little bit shorter.
the third variation is straight until it passes through the engine tin, then it takes a turn, followed by another bend before it points downward.
How do I determine which tube is for what year beetle? _________________ 1963 Ragtop |

Thanks, that's the exact style I bought and the bends at the end of the tube was interfering with the lower engine area. So I trimmed that off to make it a straight tube, and that didn't help either. Things aren't adding up. Unless I have tin that is completely wrong or parts that should not even be together on rhis engine.....things aren't fitting nicely. _________________ 1963 Ragtop |

It might help if you'd post some good pictures that detail the problems you're running into. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

I went down that road, but am still not exactly sure what I need or what is "off" with what I have. The things I have seen since I started this engine tear down has boggled my mind. So much half assed, so much missing that should be there, including mounting hardware. It's frustrating, even if this bug isn't mine, but I am the one trying to get it back on the road.
Here is the thread that I started trying to get more answers.

You have the wrong pulley tin in the pic below, the condensate drain tube should go through a hole closer to the dipstick, the wow in the cylinder tin to clear it shows where it should be.
BTW you should be using the Samba gallery for pics
Your pulley tin is for an early 40 hp, or a 73+ 1600. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

thats what throws me off. the car is a 68 autostick. but the engine is from an early 70's (year unknown). the engine is an AK series. From what I've heard, those were replacement cases and not so much an engine that was installed with the cars off the line.
so what year I'm shooting for is what complicates things, in my mind anyhow _________________ 1963 Ragtop |

Shocking as it may seem sometimes a small shop changing an engine threw on whatever was the best looking pulley tin from the pile in the corner under the workbench, if the engine was going into a 73+ model it didn't matter if there was a hole for the drain tube. Alot can happen in 53 years, and most of it wasn't likely intended to follow the rules of stock, most of the time it was to get that POS back together as cheap and quick as possible and out of the shop to make room for the next job. In the eyes of the repair shop it was just a shitty old car with a cheapskate owner who wanted it done for almost nothing, but fast. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
