I have an -022 dizzy on a '61B motor. I have set the static timing at TDC, but I am seeing close to 37 degrees at 3400rpm. Does this sound correct? It doesn't ping, and it pulls well off of idle. Thoughts?

Anything over 31 deg.s @ 3400RPM is inviting trouble unless you are using aviation fuel. Don't worry about idle timing it's full advance that counts. Might be time to take the dizzy apart and inspect for worn parts.

You understand that the 356/912 engine the timing spec was 36-38* total advance?

Do you set the timing on a VW engine to 24* total?

Don't think so but I'll check my book.

The book shows 5*Btdc static so with his dizzy he would be at 42* if he set the timing by the book. I don't have the spec.s on a 022 but it seems to be advancing too much. Remember the spec.s were for real gas not the unleaded/ethanol crap were burning today so adjustments are needed to the 37* total adv. you are correct about 37* total.
