|

Hi All,
I have a '74 Super with a VW 043-03-023A alternator. The best I can tell is that this is a 50 amp alternator with an internal regulator.
My bug also has an external regulator behind the drivers seat cargo area. The wiring looks right and nothing seems out of place.
This seems odd me.
Finally to my question:
Why would there be two regulators?
Thanks, _________________ 74 SB

The under seat is most likely disconnected or bypassed. _________________ Glenn

Not sure about that. As I said, nothing looks out of place. I have went through the bug from one end to the other. The external regulator is wired up.
Since it is still wired up, how would it be bypassed? Not being a smartarse, seriously asking.
Thanks. _________________ 74 SB

Well, show us some pictures
I've seen regulators bypassed in, ahem, creative ways. |
That would help. Looking at the regulator, the only wires that plug in to the regulator is the pig tail that is seen. I don't see any descriptive information on it. I need some schooling, please.

ok...
Looks like the original Bosch 3 prong alternators required an external regulator. I found conflicting information on the www.
Thanks for amusing me.
60ragtop is right on the money.
Thank you all for helping.
Take care. _________________ 74 SB

Basically it is what is referred to as a AL78...
Believe it was a one year only (74) before transitioning to internal regulated alternator (AL82)... _________________ “Fear The Government That Wants To Take Your Guns" - Thomas Jefferson.

This isn’t the first time a have run into a ‘74 one off item. One thing I have learned while rebuilding my bug, is that ‘74 was an odd year for sure. I guess more of a experimental and transition year. _________________ 74 SB
