Usually that's a control valve issue.
Just need to turn the top screw one way or the other until it shifts a little smoother.
Have a Bentley manual to tell you the procedure?
And try this site: http://vwar.org _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k

Autosticks run at higher idles than manuals to maintain good vacuum pressure. Try turning up your idle.
Then, be sure your servo holds vacuum. Those diaphragms go bad. |
Adding to this. Check your vacuum hoses for cracks. The system is easily compromised by any vacuum leak(s). _________________ Jimbo

Usually slamming into gear indicates that your carby set-up vacuum wise is incorrect. A 009 type distributor coupled with fitting the now disused vac advance line being connected direct to the CV. Or a manifold vacuum take off point being incorrectly used to feed the CV. The CV only needs 5 in/Hg vacuum to actuate.
If you can - post a pic of your engine bay fitting in carb/CV/Distributor.

My thoughts exactly. 10 to 1 the control valve vacuum line is connected to the wrong port on carb or intake.
Also agree with Tom's post above that the idle (when engine warmed up) needs to be around 950-1000RPMs. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.
