Doesn't your conversion technically use a modified type-1 steel pulley?
I remember helping a guy machine the bolt holes into it. Wink

Modok, excellent memory, ha!!!!

Yes as you can see in the photo from back in 1992

The second photo of a two page article what was in VW Australia, and was sent to me from Mike Sharp of Sharpbuilt Australia.

I did him a favor and sent a Porsche Fan to him and in return he send me parts from his conversion. One was the Aluminum Crank pulley.

Those Aussies sure talk funny, !! I had to ask Me what a Sidchrome was????

No internet back then so it took weeks to get an answer.

That's an odd one for sure
Last one that got me was "alf-oil" which turns out was aluminum foil, like.....
"Got some leftovers from maccas so I wrapped it in alf-oil"

That was funny.

I read the British manual and it said first remove the power plant. Figured that don't sound too bad.

Ok so were it the Power Plant, it was the freaking engine.

Finally got to take off the Alternator Belt.

The reason why my alternator light was some times going on at start up.

I cannot believe that belt was in my bug so long. The spare belt I kept in the trunk which Is on the bug now had the date I bought it with the other belt. 22 years ago. Looked fine, till I took it off. The rubber was cracked in many places. This lengthened the inside of the belt and made the belt slightly larger. placed the new belt in with same wedges and is was much tighter.

You should probably get a new belt Laughing I've heard horror stories where a worn belt is replaced with a NOS one found in the trunk, only to have it fly apart into a million pieces about 100 miles later Brick wall d'oh! Anxious

Actually I am buying a new one. The spare I put on the car I am putting it back in the trunk to go back to sleep.

What you said is interesting because when I felt spare that is now on the bug, it seemed stiffer and like it was made out of plastic.

Ha, I guess somethings get stiffer with age !

Getting a new belt tomorrow.

I was just thinking, when you buy something like a drive belt from Ebay and it says new. I doubt if it is dated like a eggs, which means it can be 20 years old.

Think I am going to go to a local Auto store with a large customer turnaround.

This belongs in a display case, not on a running engine.

How old is the aluminum pulley? A V belt grips on the sides mostly because it expands there when the belt flexes. Bend a belt and look. If the pulley sides aren't flat and are dished out then the pulley is worn out and you have to rely on excessive belt tension to keep it from slipping.

I pulled this up from Gates Belts, amazing interesting.

Drive belts under or over certain temps average 8 Years in storage.

As I said the belt that was in storage in my trunk was 22 years

Picking up a new belt tomorrow.
