I have an unusual 1966 Beetle that appears to have some galvanized exterior fittings. It is not a US model and I was told by the young man I bought it from 40 years ago that he bought it in Germany as a student before he moved to Southern California and then to Michigan State. I am the second owner. I am pretty sure it is a 1966 1200A European Standard Model from the VIN number and the way it has no fuel gauge and a 34hp "D" series engine. Does anything seem off on the trim for this model other than the bumpers? I am not sure what the original exterior parts looked like as over the years I have replaced some with USA Chrome parts out of necessity. I would like to restore it to original condition.

Wow. Thats awesome. I can see you are a fellow Hoosier, if you ever want to sell this one, keep me in mind!
Good luck, I am sure someone here has seen this trim before, but if I have I do not recall. _________________ 1974 Super Beetle

If you're talking about the exterior door handles and mirror, they look to me like castings that were never chrome plated, the mirror showing evidence of at least being painted silver.
Right offhand I'm not aware of non-chromed reproductions being made. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Correct, they were painted L-328 Steel gray along with bumpers, hub caps, boot pull and rear deck lid pull.
You and find all this stuff in the archives and the technical section here on the SAMBA.

Also, the 1200 40hp engine from 1966-1978 has the larger style oil pump and cam bearings!!! |

This is my 66 1200a standard -
A friend of mine, Brian. started the resto and I'm very slowly continuing it.
Here a couple of threads that contain some great info -
