spoiler alert, so you don't waste 7+ mins of your life watching this, he never actually removes the box (or steering wheel, bracket, ignition lock, etc) from the bus.
however, if you enjoy watching the erb sh!t-show, this is pure comedy gold! |

I think I finally get one of his videos. A person would want to take the only worthwhile piece off of the bus before drag the rusting pile to the crusher. Not that he successfully removed the steering lock, or put that bus out of our misery by crushing it.
I'm just glad he isn't torturing a nice bus. _________________ .

Pretty funny
That Bus will lower itself IF he ever got it to run
I went to the bathroom while that Video was running and never figured why he filmed that
Nice 3/4" crushed rock surface he works on too _________________ kaiser kills kids.com |

I'm not up to busting the guy's chops (or hacks), but I'm a bit puzzled as to his past postings/videos of acquiring date correct wheels and a fuel gauge for something that he makes apparent will not be put back on the road but rather used as a "storage shed"? Does that even make sense? Perhaps he's building a storage shed for someone to walk up and make him an offer on his storage shed with the intent of restoring it and putting it back on the road.....like happens all the time? |

When removing a steering box, I'd first remove the steering wheel. This can be a pain, as it can be stuck. There are a number of thread about it. Sometimes it can come off (dry bus), but sometimes a puller is needed.
As the steering box is removed by dropping it down through the floor of the bus, generally you need to remove the wheel. That bus is pretty rusty, so maybe you can actually pull the box up through the floor. I guess that's if you aren't planning on re-installing it, but just scrapping the bus.
I am surprised at the suggestion to cut the wires to remove the turn signal switch.
I would also disconnect the drag link before unbolting the box.
Thanks to Hazetguy for useful tutorials. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

After unbolting the steering box and unbolting it from the dash .I was able to just drop it on the ground and put it on a jack stand out of the way.
It says to unbolt the steering wheel but thats a big waste of time and most likely would wreck the steering wheel. There is no way that steering wheels coming off in one piece so i just moved the frame out of the way to pull the steering out with the column and the wheel..
you'll see when i reinstall it.
and yes the steering box was unbolted and out in the video _________________

With the right tools, and/or skills, things come out nice and easy.
I use my steering wheel puller all the time, and remove the steering wheel easily in one piece.
A ball joint lifter makes the drag link come off really easy as well.
Cutting the wires to the turn signal switch is just asinine. They unplug under the dash with no tools needed. You don't even need to do that, as once you take the turn signal switch off the column, you can let it hang.
Barndoor steering boxes bolt to the frame just the same as later ones, although they are internally different and thus not functionally interchangeable. They bolt up just the same.
I did see some great advice in the video. Put the hardware back in the turn signal switch, because it is hard to find and easy to lose. Definitely do that. _________________ .

I have never tried to fix a bus so rusty I could do that.
I once removed a wiper motor from a bus by opening the nose skin like a door, though.
I expect most people who pull a steering box want to fix the rust before re-installing it.
Having the box firmly attached to something, like the bus, makes it easier to remove the drag link and the steering wheel.
A steering wheel puller is great for stuck steering wheels.
Get yourself a ball joint popper, and you'll like it better than a pickle fork. There is one available fairly cheaply, don't have the link handy, sorry.

This type of tie rod separator tool can be purchased for under 30 bucks on eBay and it works great to remove tie rod ends and the ends on the drag link of buses. |
