That cavity rarely rusts in cars built before the moon vents were added (1971?). Those moon vents caused all of the problems if the factory seal failed allowing for water penetration. The foam's only role in the process is to trap the water. The foam did *not* absorb any water. Any pillow added to that cavity with a leaking moon vent seal may be *worse* because the pillow filling (whatever you use) will absorb water like a sponge and then damage the metal.
The factory seal cannot be replaced. So the only avenue is to apply generous quantities of seam sealer from the exterior along the bottom valley of the moon vent cavity. Then the factory "death" foam is probably the best stuff around to dampen sound without absorbing moisture. |
I have a '67 beetle and it was very rusty in there. There was even a pinhole on the right-hand side. I think that I'll just put pillows in and see if they help with the sound deadening. _________________ 1967 VW Beetle
