Hello Everyone, my name is Maarten, and this is my first post on Samba. I live in Montreal, and I have had my 74 Thing for three years now. I had it shipped over from California where it had been sitting at my parents place for at least 10 years. I actually inherited the car from my cousin, who passed away tragically in a motorcycle accident. My cousin had modified the engine quite heavily, dual carbs, hydraulic lifters etc. I had to install a rebuild engine last summer because nobody in Montreal knew how to adjust the carbs, and hydraulic lifters even less so. Right now I am looking for a new exhaust system, but a replica of the original one, with the tail pipes coming through the bumper. So here comes the question with which I need your help. Does anyone know where in Canada, or on the east coast, or anywhere, in that order pof preference, I can buy this exhaust system. I look forward to hearing from you |

Look for a used S&S header and muffler set up:

check with Mike Basso at Thingparts.com
Also you can buy a raised header and then make your muffer set up either single or dual and go through the bumper hole cutouts. Downside is you need to remove the muffler to adjust the valves. |

Hello, thank you for your info, but that muffler does not look like it is stock, I found this muffler at JBugs, that looks like the original stock muffler, is it not. What would be the advantage of the one you showed me, increased performance?

The JBugs unit will be LOUD!
There is a lot of into in this thread:

I have a parts website, we're in Toronto but we don't have any original style Thing exhausts.
I am a little confused about your engine. Is the newer engine more stock than the one that was modified heavily? That is a big factor in what you do for exhaust. When I wanted an original style '74 Thing muffler I made one using a Beetle unit. _________________ SL |

Hello Scott
Since you are from Toronto you probably know master builder Herb Schumacher from Markham. I have a friend in Lac st Jean Quebec, from whom I bought the engine, he had bought it for his Karman Ghia from Schumacher, who completely strips and rebuilds vw engines. My friend ended up never using it, so I bought it to replace the temperamental souped up engine I had gotten with the Thing
Here is the description of the engine
"rebuild air cooled beetle engine for beetles and other vw types. ready to install, 1600cc dual port 12 volt. comes with new piston-cylinder set,2 cylinder heads with stainless steel exhaust valves , muffler j pipes ,carburettor, distributor, fuel pump, alternator, manifold, ignation wireset, and much more"
I would like to find an exhaust system that is NOT noisy. I would like to find a ceramic coated new exhaust, that is stock, and build so that I can have the tips of the exhaust come out of my bumper, like the original thing. Ideally it has the pipes for the heating of the intake as well.
Here is a picture of the engine
Here is a picture of my old exhaust
So Scott, you mentioned that build one from a beetle muffler, does that mean no one makes the kind of muffler that I had, and that I am looking for.
I will read the thread you send me, thank you Scott. |

Shoot, i completely forgot about that reproduction '74 muffler! If you got one of those you could have it ceramic coated yourself, it's a useful investment which for sure will make it last a lot longer. The Thing repro muffler will directly replace what's on the engine now.
I do know Herb Schumacher! _________________ SL |

Hello Scott, I was told by a paint guy that if my muffler is already rusted, which it obviously is, it would not do much good in protecting the muffler from further rust damage, which is one of the reasons I would like to do the ceramic paint job, the other is that it will look much better then having that rusted muffler stick out from under my car. In your experience, after sandblasting this muffler to get the rust off, it would be benificial to ceramic coat the muffler? |

Thank you Glenn and Obus for your input, I looked into the options you recommended. I am leaning towards the Tri Mil muffler, since it has the pre-heat option. Scott got me into considering to ceramic coat my old muffler, which is very rusted but solid. Does anybody have the Tri Mil Vintage SS sport muffler to share their experience, or does anyone have ceramic coating a rusted muffler experience?

For my money you can't ceramic coat the muffler in your photo, not successfully or effectively at least, even if it's sandblasted. And also, that muffler in your photo, IMO, is not worth the effort and cost of ceramic coating, even if it were new. It's a cheap product.
With a stock engine you should retain the manifold heating. Your manifold will almost for sure ice up on the highway if you have the central stock carb without preheat, especially living in MTL. _________________ SL |

Hey Scott
I was coming to the same conclusion, thanks again for your input, I am going with the Tri Mil, with the preheat and extra quite options. I have a question, I have my old engine that still works fine, double carbs and hydraulic lifters, am I allowed to offer it for sale on this site, if so, where? The classified is for vehicles only?

Consider using the Vintage Speed Thing muffler.
I am currently using my second VS muffler (the first one was wrecked in an accident that totaled the car).
My current VS muffler is the "extra quiet" version, and I am very happy with it.
My Thing is a '73, so I also use his J-tubes.
There is some adjustability for engine with, as well as bumper hole/tailpipe alignment.
Also, for single carb people, the heat riser version comes with little "scoops" in the heat riser outlets to direct the flow of exhaust gasses through the heat riser tube.
Good luck, Mondshine |
