Learned 5 Westies have been stolen from my neighborhood in Oakland CA recently, some more than once.
My ‘87 is parked in my well lit driveway but it doesn’t have an alarm or club.
Does anyone have any recommendations on devices that deter theft? _________________ +++++++++++++

Club+kill switch of some kind. Make it harder to steal than the car next to it. Same theory as a bike. Make it look like more trouble than it’s worth, then make it *actually* more trouble than it looks to be.
I also park mine behind a locked gate. _________________ 1986 Syncro westfauxlia EJ22

You could try one of these. I have another version of this for just in case but never used it.
Vechkom Anti-Theft Auto Stainless Steel Clutch Lock Vehicle Security Protection Supplies Car Brake Lock https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CWNZPLM/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_g_53416QYMVR41S792VE9X
I also have a GPS tracker with text and app. It's hard wired and in the cabinet next to the water cabinet. |

I have a onestep GPS. Just 3 wires to wire in. I wired it to my house battery that's under the bench. I believe I got a 11.95 a month deal. Not the cheapest. It has a lot of features that I haven't explored. The APP is decent. The support is ok so far. It's free cancelation so I will try it out for a while. Check out the other threads in the search there's A LOT of options. |

I run a long heavy chain that wraps around my front control arms & diff to a steel post in the driveway. The chain runs under the gate (see pic).
It also prevents it from rolling down the driveway if someone were to remove the chock behind the wheel.

In my opinion, one should have at least one preventative measure which is visibly apparent (steering wheel lock, clutch lock, wheel boot) to deter the casual thief and send him off in search of easier prey.
And at least one well-hidden preventative measure, so that if he returns well prepared to defeat the first measure, he's stopped up by the second (or third).
The only thing better than successfully preventing the theft of your beloved Vanagon, is doing so WITHOUT the smashed windows and demolished dash of a failed theft attempt ... _________________ Camp Westfalia

Do you have the original Tachometer in your dash? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Beat me to it. A gate/fence is also a good option. _________________ '87 Syncro

Here in London, UK they'll profile you, follow you around for a week, learn your routines, etc... Then they'll kick your door down and have you at gun point to hand over your keys. A garage does squat in that scenario. A shame, really. _________________ 1988 Caravelle - FB25B - Syncro converted

I mean, if someone is going to go through that effort you let them take it. Only private security is going to stop that level of effort. I didn't realize that Vanagon's are worth so much in the UK that Ocean's 11 level preparation is needed.
GPS trackers would help in recovery. _________________ '87 Syncro
