Anyone know at what point VW started using lockup torque converters? What codes are the lockup type. I'm particularly curious whether any air cooled models had the lockup type. Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge no VW boxer engine used a lockup style torque converter, conversely with time VW went to higher and higher stall speeds to get more oomph out of their tiny engines. I would put either and "H" or "Z" Vanagon torque converter into any earlier rig and enjoy the extra acceleration.

i got my old girl out of the driveway on Sunday.. went around the block a coupld of times. Engine ran well... but the front brakes froze and so she was pushing hard to go. on top of that, it stalled a few times at stop signs.

i replaced the valve body seal recently, and may have too little fluid in there. gonna check that asap. it had 'correct level' on downhill incline with motor off. now i know it has to be level and running.

Wondering if it's a bad TC tho. the auto shifted well. it was under load from the brakes so it kept downshifting and revving high.. but seemed to be handling it. 3rd lap around the block is when it began to almost stall. Then stalled in driveway (nose high) when i put it in gear.

hoping it's just low fluid. and i guess if i hosed my TC, at least good to know vanagons are available replacements.
