Hi everyone....I have a 1600 cc engine with mechanical advance 009 distributor. I recently added a electronic ignition and new plugs. Once I did this the car would not idle, misfire, and would turn off. The only way I'm able to have it idle is by advancing the timing at idle to about 30 BTDC....which I know is crazy but at the 7 BTDC is it will not idle. things i have considered:
1. The electronic ignition kit is bad?
2. The spark plugs I installed are the 1/2 in vs the 3/4 in long? Not sure if this matters.
It is running smooth but when I put a timing light the expected mark is way to the left...so I 'm way advanced!
Ok...let the ideas roll![/img] |

you need to set the timing on a 009 to about 28° BTDC at 3K RPM _________________ Daily driver: '69 Baja owned 44 yrs - Plan B: '81 Rabbit Diesel LS Deluxe - Plan C: '72 Ghia

Oh...darn...so I may be spot on! I thought it was 7 BTDC? So then the mystery is solved?!! |

For 7 BTDC I measured 11 mm from TDC on the wheel diameter. What would it be for 28 BTDC? |

When you find the 28°btdc at 3k rpm lock the distributor right there. Release the throttle and the motor will fall back to somewhere between say 6° and 11° If it still won't idle you likely need carb adjustments _________________ '73 super. |

HI...yes I understand how to set at 28 BTDC and lock the distributor. I do not have a mark for 28 degrees and my wheel is not a fancy one with te measurements on it...so there should be a radial measurement on the wheel to know where the 28 deg are so I can confirm and set!
Anyone?
It is carburator...not FI
many thanks. |

or get a timing light where you can "dial in" the advance setting. _________________ Glenn

The spark plugs are specific to the heads you are using. Stock heads used 1/2" long threads to place the electrodes just in the combustion chamber. After market heads may use thicker heads that need 3/4" threads to get the electrodes into the chamber. If you are running 1/2" threaded plugs inside 3/4" threaded heads the electrodes will be shrouded inside the hole and less effective. This pic illustrates the issue. The middle example is ideal.

Break out the calculator and tape measure. Find the widest diameter of the crank pulley. Stock pulleys are around 7in diameter. Multiply this by Pi (3.14159) and it will give you the circumference around the outside of the pulley. Divide this distance by 360 to get the distance for 1deg radial increments around the lip of the pulley. Multiple this by 28 to determine the distance (CW) from the center of the TDC "dimple" to where a 28BTDC timing mark can be added using a pen or paint. Add a mark for 32BTDC as well. With these two marks you can adjust to anywhere from 28BTDC to 32BTDC. 30BTDC is smack in the middle of the two marks. These marks will allow you to adjust the max total advance @3K or @3.8K rpm so you are sure the engine does not over advance. The specific engine rpms are not important as long as the mechanical advance has stopped increasing (maxed out). _________________ AshMan40

If you didn't remove the 009 from the motor when you installed the electronic ign. the timing should be fine if it ran good before so I would recheck the install of the ign. module (correct gap and mag. sleeve installed correctly). If you have a compass and protractor, draw a circle the size of the pulley OD, draw a line for the diameter, and place the protractor on the dia. line and draw a tangent to 29* BTDC, measure it or cut it out and take it out to the car and paint a line. |
