Just bought a 63 single cab and without looking underneath, the brake pedal moves side to without pressing it to engage the brakes.

What could the pedal assembly be missing to cause this?

Appreciate the help

Important bolts?, non worn bushings?, regular lubrication maintenance?

I'd be looking into that ASAP myself, sounds potentially scary.

Good start. Bus was supposed to have new brakes which means new shoes etc but something isn’t right with the pedal assembly

If that pedal is a problem, what else is suspect? Only two ways to tell:

1. Wait till a succession of things fall apart leaving you in a lurch, crashed, or running thru a red light when the brakes do not work.

2. Get under the bus and start going thru everything. That way you avoid being one of those owners that is always waxing about how unreliable their VW is/was.

Once met a fella who had pulled about two weeks previous out a bus from where it had sat for many many years in a back yard. We told him to go thru the brakes, change the transaxle gear oil, inspect front wheel bearings and repack with new grease. He told us we were full of it, a week later he called because the passenger front spindle had sheared off at highway speed. Probably because the old grease could not lubricate the bearings anymore, and so the one or both of the bearings on that side welded themselves to the spindle and tore it off. Good times......

If you do not yet have a copy of the transporter workshop manual that was back in the day supposed to be used only by the VW dealer mechanics, then get a copy ASAP. Yes it is more expensive than any other bus repair manual, but it has four or five times more info. Good used copies do show up in the classifieds now and then, so best to search at least daily there.

You can access thru the link below the parts manuals with lots of fantastic exploded diagrams, and a lot more other need to know info:

http://www.oacdp.org/

That will show what parts are supposed to be there, and you can use the parts numbers to search online for them.

Is the movement the whole pedal assembly going on through the floor sliding side to side or is it just the foot pad part tipping side to side or some other description?

It sounds like something is loose or a part is missing.

I would suggest review the online parts list and compare it to what is installed.

I had a similar thought to Greg’s point: the return spring not being fully or properly seated on the seat (shallow bowl-shaped washer-like mamajama -proper nomenclature). Installed an assembly before without confirming proper seating of the spring at the seat and had a wobbly sensation when bleeding. Couple minutes later, I properly seated the assembly and voila. Basta.

That’s what I’m thinking. Just wanted to see if something else might be the issue

Maybe that’s it. It’s probably something simple like that
