Looking at two sets of barndoor rims today..... the 1/53 set has the inner rim welded to the outer.

The 3/53 set has the inner rim riveted to the outer and an indent stamped in the rim for the air valve. Can't find anything in the T2 Spec guide on the rim difference or anywhere else for that matter.

So the question for the Barndoor fanatic is.... was there a supplier change during this time frame or did VW take wheels from two suppliers when building the barndoors?

They did indeed take lots of parts from several suppliers. The same difference was on the Split bug 16' rims. (They are 3 inches wide, yours are probably 3.5 or 3.75 something?)

yes vw used two manufactures for wheels, one used a welded construction and the other a riveted construction, people think the rivited wheels predate the welded, but they were both manufactured at the same time, the barndoor size is 16 3.5, and should have 5.50 16 tyres. Very Happy

Thanks for the info....

Here's what it says on the rivetted rims:

4 53 KRONPRINZ 3.50D X 16 DIN with a time expired Goodyear bias ply 6.00 - 16

Is it fair to say the 3.5's x 16" with the valve indent and drilled hole opposite are early barndoor or??

I think the indent around the valve makes it an earlier wheel

I thought so too but hearing that they are around with indent and 53 year stamp makes them slightly later than I thought.. I'll poke around for a date on them..

Just found a jan 51 date stamp on one of mine. They are all Kronprinz riveted ones. Date stamps are faint on these early ones.

And mine are dated 2-50, and have not the indents

Just to add more confusion to this i have 3! types of barndoor 16s in my garage, i have the welded type and the riveted type as mentioned already but i also have one thats like the welded type without the indent for the valve hole but its riveted in 4 places were the welds should be, the date is unreadable as is the make

We know the non valve indented wheels come riveted or welded it depends which manufacturer produced them. (Kronprinz riveted / Lemmertz welded)
As far as I have observed the valve indented wheels are all riveted.

Don't forget about Fudrad made wheels which have a slight difference inthe offset of the centers from the barrel.
