Do you have a welder? Could also weld a nut to the stud…just cover the case when doing so

A welder has been on my wish list for years. I first have to pull electrical to my garage which is will not be an easy task. Maybe this year I'll get to it.

Take a nut and slice it across to make two thinner nuts, then use those, or keep filing down two nuts on one face until you can get at least three turns of thread from the second nut on top of the first.

Clean the thread and use green loctite on a nut threaded on the end -the stuff that doesnt come undone.

File two flats opposite each on the stud, then use an adjustable spanner.

Then get angry with a set of vise grips and simply wind out the old one

Thanks for that suggestion Mikesjames, I'd probably cut my thumb off trying to cut a nut in two. haha Then I'd get angry at it for taking my thumb.

I did get that stud puller tool that TXoval suggested and it worked great. Did even mess up the threads. It will be handy to have in my tool box.

I'm back at it trying to get this motor together. I have some progress pictures along with some questions.

Yes, I'm using the cool tins. The sleds don't fit with the exhaust.

added the missing tabs to my heads.

I'm hoping this is my last mock up.

Test fitting a pushrod tube.

Cleaned and painted Cylinders. I scrubbed with brake cleaner about 3 time to get a clean cylinder and then coated with Total Seal dry lube. It turns green when the cylinder is clean. So I'm going to run these dry except put some assembly lube on the piston skirts.

All assembled and ready to go.....I think. What is the preferred method of clocking the rings? I didn't really pay attention other than putting them at 90 degrees apart. I've seen some people are putting the oil control at 12 o'clock and the two top rings at 10 and 2 o'clock.

I splurged and invested in these. Thanks Tabari

Too late but is this oil pickup a bad choice? Tabari mentioned most people swap them out because of the tight bend. I'm really just ready to assemble it at this point.

This plug is sticking out a bit but I didn't want to risk cracking the case. Does this look like a potential issue?

Wasn't paying attention when I was figuring out crank end play and caused this with a screwdriver while pulling the flywheel out. I should be able to clean it up no problem.

Thanks All, I'm hoping to have the short block buttoned up this week.

The CB pickup tube is $20…you have spent a lot time on the engine and this is a smart upgrade to the POS that comes with the case.

Fix the damage to the cam plug now and don’t use screwdrivers or pry bars to remove the flywheel Sad

If you need a flywheel puller make one or ask for one. I’ll send you mine just so you don’t do that again!

Thanks txoval, I actually have a CB pickup but the tube diameter is larger than the one in the case.

No more screwdrivers for me. Do you have a link to a flywheel puller? I've didn't know there was one for the flywheel.

Thanks,
Jason

Need to make one…

https://youtu.be/fy_nLdiXWAw

Ron Lummus sells one but it’s $$$

I will seriously send you mine unless you’re done setting end play

The diameter should be the same

Thanks for that. I've got my end play set so I shouldn't need it. I will do a last check before I put the seal in but I have it set for .004 now.

Any suggestions for piston ring gap orientation? And does that gallery plug look like it's not seated enough? It was pretty snug when I put it in.

Thanks,
Jason

Yes, that's the large plug at the oil pump pickup. I have my rings oriented pretty close to the above diagram but I'm not sure I put the compression ring at the top so I'll pull them back out and check.

Everything went pretty smooth but if any of you use the Jaycee pushrod tubes on your builds I suggest having an extra set of hands to help push the head down while you get a few nuts on.

Next up I will have to pull my old motor out of the car so I can swap engine tin and head to powdercoating and getting some parts polished.

Why not use stock pushrod tubes on a fresh build?

I was going to use the CB wide mouth tubes but at the time they were out of stock. The JayCee's got good reviews from what I read so I went with them. Hoping I don't get any leaks.

I have a spendy set of CSP tubes (same idea as Jaycee). Have had them on for a year and no leaks. Need to pull the heads and re-seal cylinder bases, so I could put some stock tubes in, but these CSP tubes have proven to work well and it's nice not fumbling with the tubes when you're torquing the heads on, especially when I'm trying to get a good cylinder base seal.

With those tubes you install them after the head is torqued…one at a time, intake tubes first, then exhaust

Hello All, I got a little more work done on this motor. I have a question about installing a new oil cooler. Do you guys clean them out and if so how? Use a hose to shoot water through it and follow up with air?

Thank you
