We were just there a week ago. And I have wondered about vw’s in Belize. I did spot a sweet modified white van with South American plates. I can’t remember which country. Lol. My husband I are planning to retire in Belize and question if we should take our Thing. It’s what the car is made for! I’d like to know if there’s anyone out there tooling around Belize in a Thing and hear your stories. But

Given that they were probably right-hand drive, I would have expected those vehicles to be a VW Golf and VW Caddy! Rolling Eyes

Recalling that Belize was formerly known not so long ago as British Honduras, I would expect them to drive on the left and have right-hand drive vehicles!?!

« Driving Side »

« When you’re driving in Belize, which side of the road are you going to drive on? As a former British colony, you must drive on the left side of the roads in Belize; it’s the same as other countries under the same colony. If you are an American who is used to driving on the right-hand side of the road, it could take some practice to familiarize yourself with such traffic rules. But if you’ve ever driven in some parts of Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and a few other European countries, this shouldn’t be as challenging for you. »

Don't be surprised if you sometimes bump into members of the British armed forces (including Nepalese Ghurkas) there, recalling that they still undertake much of their training in jungle warfare there.

Perhaps the government of Belize was coerced by their naughty neighbours into changing from driving on the left as in all civilised countries, to driving on the right. Sweden made the changeover on the single day of 3rd September 1967, which is why the "split-screen", pre-1968 VW Type 2s originally registered in Sweden, are all RHD - right-hand drive.
