Is there somewhere I could find the stock dimensions for the engine compartment of a 73 super beetle? I had a devil of a time getting my engine out, and I'm just wondering if it was maybe rear ended in the past and shoved forward. There's no obvious damage and deck lid closes OK. I probably just don't have solo engine removal technique refined. This was my first engine removal.

As I pulled the engine straight back the rear end of the engine hit the area of the engine compartment in front of the rear bumper before the front part of the engine had cleared the studs at the trans. This was even after I removed the muffler. I tried to sort of tilt the rear of the engine down as I pulled the engine back, and this eventually got it out, but it buggered up the area around the trans studs, and it sure wasn't pretty or smooth or interference free, like I see in some of the videos.

Do you have the rear apron up 24"+ above the ground for best clearance?
