My name is Landon, I am 15, and my dad and I started looking for my first car when I was 14. We decided to buy a 69 VW fastback from Prescott, AZ. I took the trip with my dad and grandpa. My dad and I started to dig into it about 6 months ago. My goal is to get it to be ready and safe to be my around town daily driver by the time I turn 16. I am hoping to get the forum up to date with all of our current progress. After I get this forum updated I will try to post often with new progress. I am looking forward to share this project and to get pointers and advice along the way. Here is a picture of my car the day we picked it up in Arizona.

Welcome Landon! In 1976, the first car I owned when I was 18 was a 1969 Fastback like yours but mine was blue. Is yours a manual or an automatic? Mine was a 4 speed manual.

I drove that car about 20 miles each wasy to college for almost 2 years even in the snow. It always started and was very reliable. Only reason I didn't drive it for all 4 years of college was a big chevy wagon hit me in the back one night on an icy road when I was stopped at a stop sign. Even then it ran for another couple of months. The only thing that stopped it was I couldn't check or change the oil because of all the damage in the rear and the engine ran low on oil and seized.

Post as many pictures as you can. Everyone here likes to see pictures.

Once again, welcome and congratulations!

Welcome, Landon. Nice looking VW. Keep us posted on progress and let's see some more pics. After many years of being into VWs and owning many Beetles and Buses, I am in the early stages of my first Type 3 project-like yours, mine is a Fastback, also. My dad had a '67 Fastback from 1968-71 or 72, and just recently purchased a very clean '73.

Looks like a nice solid, complete and mostly unmolested project car. Those are the best to start with. My first type 3 was a 66 Squareback, that had for 2 years, then sold it off. About 4 years later I missed driving a type 3, and bought a 70 Fastback (now my wife's car), and we've had it since 1989, when I drove it from Texas to Michigan (4th of July long weekend).

Howdy, Show Low AZ. here. It looks like it will be a nice ride when safe to be driven. Leave the car and exterior paint like it is original Patina. Something like that cannot be faked.
As another VW guy from Arizona where did you find it and how??

Welcome Landon!

looks like a great start. A lot of us started with VW Bugs and later into type 3's, and often discuss how much better they are. You're lucky and get to dive right into the better car Laughing

lots of us here have so much knowledge and even parts to share on these cars - you found the right place to seek.

congrats, and looking forward to see this one come back alive Applause

Yup, That'll make Trammy happy, as he loves stock cars with FI like god and VW intended. Cool

Hey Landon!

Congrats on the first car. You certainly got a good car to start out on! May 2nd this year will be 10 years since I got my 70 Squareback when I was 15! Im now picking away slowly at a 66 fastback while I teach auto body repair and do my masters degree. Crazy how ten years flies by.

Take your time, learn through trial and error, as well as great advice from the great people here, but most importantly, have fun!

Definitely going to be keeping the fuel injection, and we’ll be getting to that soon. Here are some more pictures to help get this up to date.

Fantastic man. I love seeing young guys getting involved in this hobby. Looking forward to your pics man, and keep after it. What are all the plans for it? I see you're doing chassis stuff but where does this work start and end?

Personally I'd leave the outer patina and mechanically rebuild the car. They're super cool when they are original.
