I am looking for dates the VW Canada tag were used to confirm if my bus originally came with one. After some looking around I found very little information on this so think it deserves its own thread.

Here is one off a 54 bug.

Volkswagen of Canada was formed in 52 with very few 52 units being sold.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Did they start using the the tag immediately? I did find mention of a march 53 BD with one but no photo.

And when did the tags end? I haven't found any photos older than 54. here is a 20-085###

Also Number of rivets. Did the bug have 4 and BD have 2? All the photos that I found of bugs with VW Canada tags have 4 rivets and the BD and anything with pressed tags have 2.

Maybe we can make a list of build dates of BDs with a VW Canada tag...

My March 53 Barndoor came with one. It's held in place by 4 sheet metal screws. I know I've seen 54 bugs and buses with them. Not sure about 55 model year Canadian VWs though. I know by 56 they seem to be no longer a thing. However it seems not all pre 54 Canadian VWs had them. Why I'm not sure, but it is a pretty cool tag IMO.

Interesting. I though maybe they replaced the original tag with the VW Canada tag but seems they may have came without a tag or holes if yours was screwed on.

Can you add a photo of the tag? I am curious if there is variation in placement and also the screws. Maybe yours had screws as there is no access to the back side on a SC.

So 3 screws and what looks like a forth hole that was not used. Alinement looks off so maybe holes were hand punched in tags.

Actually the other BD photo looks like the tag was screwed on also.

Entirely possible that the other screw fell out after 30 years of Saskatchewan farm truck use.

I know of an early March built, Canadian delivered bus and it does not have a Volkswagen Canada tag, but does have the original german tag.

March 53?

My understanding is anything sent to Canada or US up to around 55 had the "Made in Germany" tag.

On an Oct '54 Bus rescued in Ontario in 2008, no Canada Tag. Cruddy photo, sorry, but it's the embossed German tag.

I was curious about that also. Unfortunately mine had the original paint stripped in that area.

I've (with help from others) been working to document this with a Canadian Barndoor registry, so far it looks like the Canadian VIN tags started in the second shipment of 53 (September of 53) and ended sometime in 1954. 1955 Canadian Barndoors don't appear to have the VW of Canada VIN.

thanks for the info Trevor, we have other buses from that delivery in March of 1953 without the VW of Canada VIN. Great info!

I'll do some research on the other buses in that shipment and report back.

Hi Patrick.

The Quebec Deluxe (Feb ‘55) has no Canada tag; just the usual 4 rivit vin tag and a made in Germany tag …….
