70 square, is there supposed to be some type of escutcheon behind the knobs?
Mine seems to have to large of a hole and the knobs kinda flop around.

Thanks
Mark.

The switch is plastic (including the threads), and held with a nut and washer from the passenger side of the dash. Sounds like that is loose or missing, and the plastic knob is all that's holding it on the dash.

Don't overtighten the nut or you can crack the plastic switch housing at the threads.

Thanks,

However mine does not look like that. I have a plastic shaft the sticks through the hole in the dash and the knobs just snap on and off.

I have a plastic shaft that is solid mounted behind the dash.
Is it your shaft or knob that's floppy?

Here are a couple of pictures. You can see the plastic shaft just floats around and the shoulder on the knob does not fill the space.

p.s. don't mind the crap around the holes. wait that doesn't sound right. Smile

Mine doesn't touch the dash either but doesn't flop around.
Take the other knob off and unbolt the whole assembly behind the dash for inspection/repair.

That's not a switch.

Those two are knobs for the fresh air ventilation. The "switch" is just as I posted.

Best to fix your post title if you want a better answer.

The knob/cable assembly mounts behind the dash (towards front of the car, underneath) but IIRC, the knobs just pull off. Yours may be broken, and you'll need new assembly
You can find what you need in the Samba classifieds:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2084224

What's that glue snot around the knobs and glovebox lid? Did someone apply a fake wood vinyl sheet to the dash?

No, mine is not broken and I have the knobs and shaft assembly.

My question was, is there supposed to be something else there that fills the holes like an escutcheon or washer? I can not find a parts diagram for this assembly.

That fan switch is for 71 up, my car is a 70.

Yes, I think there's a plastic escutcheon that fills the gap. I don't know if ISP West (I'd try them anyway) would have them or not, but you could look thru the classifieds, as they should be the same as a 68 thru 73 part. I think a beetle version has a step in it to fit in the padded dash, so that won't work.
You could get new rubber knobs from them too. Wink

In this picture (that is terrible) there appears to be a piece between the knob and the shaft. That is what I need.

May have to 3D print some..
