Edit: All is good. Mike B from the Mid Western facebook has a house and shop 30 miles from here. He is going to host me and let me use his tools and lift.
AAA should be here in 30 minutes.
The Vanagon cult is strong. 👍

Well The radius rod broke just after I crossed over the Mississippi.
I am on the side of the highway, in a fairly safe spot, and need a place to get towed to.
A driveway or a shop.
I tried to contact the only close Rescue Squad member but no reply yet.
Put out a call for help on fb Vanagon Cafe.
Anyone here have any advice?
Thanks.

Reach out to the Missouri Micros, they should know where to take it.

That darn Mississipi river, always breaking stuff...
How was the handling without the radius rod?
Should be a fairly easy fix. I hope it goes well. |

You could try calling Ho Lee Fuk! Taint never seen on break there that wasn’t rusty or damaged.

Great to see you in a safe harbor, with a lift no less...
One of the threads somewhere said radius rod breakage can be caused by the big curved metal radius rod bushing cups being replaced incorrectly:
concave: =(O)========= incorrect/reversed around the bushing, rather than
convex: =)O(========= correct as stock Is there any truth to this? _________________ The Syncro years (2005-16) - The 2WD years (2017-23) - Westy & WBX rebuild spreadsheet - Sanchius & Tuna: The Video

when I read the title...I though another neglected van, I expected worn bushings and the rod to have been eaten away where it contacts the hole, but no....
Any explanation? how about a picture straight on of the fractured end?
Previous fatigue? Very strange break. |

No, David's 87 was in pretty good shape. i too was wondering how Radius broke... never seen that before....
job wasn't difficult, just took some time to get it set up on car lift, spray it with good soaking of Kroil, penitrating oil...and clean exposed thread with wire brush, those three Nuts were on tight.
no where David could possiably get the Radius rod anywhere near here, and even if he ordered on from?? wrecking yard?? It still would took 36-48 hours to get it, in addition he had no place to do work or tools to accomplish work.
one nuts on end we able to get off with high torque air impact gun, but other two we had to do hard way, by hand with Wrench, turning and turning turning turning stopping to clean threads of rust / crud again and again...
then one nut REFUSED turn at all even with long wrench and long breaker bar, my brother stepped in with old trailer hitch with about 6 feet long and said watch this: nut turned...then since no where to get the part we removed my raduis rod and installed it on David 87... we would finished 3 hours sooner if we hadn't had to run 45/ 50 minutes each way to get my Westfalia camper out of storage...
now, the good news is I'm all set to install new bushings in my Westy. Mine were worn, David were pretty good condition...
by 4 pm he was back on highway heading to Uath.... pretty good day if you ask me.

So I deduce that you took parts off of your van to put on Dave's van, and that the nuts on your radius rod were stuck tight?
Dave is a great guy and one that would have done the same for you, glad he's back on the road in under 24 hours on a Sunday. Amazing!
