Well…
This is long overdue, but here we are. I’m currently restoring a car I have owned for 13 years now!
My 1951 Deluxe was originally a hardtop sedan, 11C car, but previous owner opted to add a period correct 3 fold section from a donor split. This thread is 2 years overdue, so I have some catching up to do. I have definitely been wrapped up in keeping this project a secret (mostly from my son, who thinks I sold the car 2 years ago when it left the house), but I don’t care if thesamba is in the know! If you’d like to see the progress in real time, feel free to give me a follow over at the instagram page (@splittymcfiddyjuan).
Now, let’s get to it! Here are some pics from the years before I took it apart.

What's the story in keeping it from your son? That sounds interesting! |

I had a lot of life going on 3-4 years ago and the last thing I cared about was VWs. I went back and forth on selling the car but ultimately decided to keep it and see the resto through.
He went to school one day and when he came home, it was gone! He knew I had tossed the idea of selling around and just couldn’t believe I did. To this day, he wishes I still had it, so he will have to keep wishing until it pops up again

I had taken this car as far as I could without blowing it apart over the 9 years. It was just time…especially when I started seeing how bad the door bottoms and heater channels were. My son started it off by removing the semaphores.

Here’s the day the car left my place a few years ago. I had gathered a lot of replacement metal and other parts by this time and my fellow DLK club members came through to assist with the transport back to a fellow club-member’s shop. This was 19 July 2020.

Here are some close-ups of how bad some areas were. Also, like many others, my birth certificate never listed my car’s color, but everything I had come to know of the car was that it was a black car originally. Even wearing a lot of OG paint, minus the hood and fenders. After looking at the backside of dash and door jambs, I’m wondering if that is pastel green I was seeing…🤔

29 July 2020:
After blasting, it was apparent this car was hiding ALOT!

I was not ready for the creatures that revealed themselves after blasting the body. This split was a patch panel haven. 😧😧😧

Door bottoms were toast on both sides. Door bottom outer and inner skins were replaced on both doors, thanks to Virtanen at Restoration Panels.
