Ya, a sad day today for me for sure.
My two boys just went off to their last first day of school together this morning.
Since the older one's a senior this year, it's that last pic of its kind.
On a happier note,
Jerry the machinist finished off the gear mods:
Take a minute to dig these bad kids.
On the left we have the 1.32 donated by Elliott, with a 4th hub pilfered and flipped,
Plus some teeth broken off, a thicker stop washer, welded in place,
Then finally surface ground and clearanced on the ID for the late hub.
On the right is a new splined 3-4 hub clearanced for the early gear,
Plus some clearance for thicker 091 snap rings, and a few oil holes for good measure.
Here's our first 091 snap ring going in with the steel-cage rollers:
Pinion stack together with a custom-ground circlip to zero clearance.
Also a few extra thou for oil on 1St.
On the 3-4 side we're tight to the 091 snap rings on both sides of the hub.
.009+ on 4th:
A bit more on 3rd:
Thinking these will be good numbers for a street box,
Not too big, but not tight either.
Got the stacks together and onto the jig.
Put in the final diff bearings and gave them a feel.
The final bearings, )even though they're the exact same bearings ) tightened up over the setup bearings.
You could feel things a bit tighter.
Lift-off was about .012.
It didn't feel "Dag!" tight like the one i did with Scott.
Certainly wasn't notchy, and not real stiff either.
Technically .012 is too much, but I'm betting the races aren't seated tight against the shims or something.
It'll get beaten upon and open up no doubt.
Feels really good so I'm going with it.
Gotta learn to trust the feel.
We'll give it one final check of backlash and another pattern on final assembly.
Spent a couple hours screwing up my mouth like the village idiot with the shift jig.
There's a -slight- variation in the overall width of the whole hub/synchro stack on 3-4 since they got modified like they did.
Thinking if a fork is going to drag on a slider a bit it's best on 3rd not 4th.
3rd won't be used long tome like 4th.
It's not bad but i can feel it.
Big thing that's hanging me up now is this Weddle reverse idler.
We have an early paddle reverse setup here with the big heavy block on the rail instead of the stamped one.
Wondering if this is part of the issue?
See, the thing is adjusted clear over as far as it will go to disengage it.
it clears the big gear on the 1-2 slider when in 2nd, but just barely.
It will hit if i nudge it a little.
When engaged, it's way in:
Having the reverse engage deeply isn't really a problem i guess,
And long as it clears the slider teeth when disengaged...
The hold-down bolt there didn't have a washer under it.
It's supposed to have a washer, right?
Do i have parts mismatched or something?
or is this just a consequence of the wider aftermarket reverse idler?
Almost there...
If i can just get over this reverse thing it's practically done! _________________ Bus Motor Build

WHoo! I jinxed myself there no doubt.
After working on it all morning i tried to stab it together about 2 with no lunch.
Total disaster..
Damn aftermarket pinion nut is a huge PITA!
Shoulder on it doesn't clear reverse gear in the diff area.
This means you have to stab the pinion bearing a little, tighten the nut a little, tap the pinion some more, turn the nut... On and on and on!
Couple that with what seem like mismatched paddle reverse gear parts and it was a total shitshow.
Reverse gear kept falling off the paddle, and then wouldn't engage the paddle in the slot on the idler gear once it finally went in,
I'm all rassling the hotass thing on the ground cussing and spitting and kicking things.
We had tree trimmers outside looking at me like a crazy man.
They left without saying a word.
While the new synchros were being a bit sticky on the jig, they really stuck once inside the case. :fist:
Neutral wouldn't turn clean, you could hear the reverse idler hitting when in 2nd.
Oh a real shitshow. Total nightmare.
Luckily i got it back apart before it cooled off too much.
Put it back into the jig and it behaves nicely again.
Put it partway together and in a box and set it aside.
Maybe we'll go see Scott or something will come to me.
Time for a time out!
Just did that Ghia box and it was paddle reverse and it went flawlessly.
But it was all one core tranny not a mishmash of different boxes like this one.
Damn!
I'll put my failures here just like successes.
Ain't too proud.
No fighter wins 'em all.
Getting knocked down is part of being in the ring. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Aaah I remember that, it's the same on the Bus Box.
My solution? Get lucky. I heated the case QUITE hot to make sure the bore was big, and just worked fast enough and got lucky enough for the pinion bearing flats to line up with the reference bosses inside the case as I went "Tap - turn - tap - turn - tap - turn"
I got the feeling that if I had to do this over and over again, I wouldn't get lucky, I'd get frustrated. _________________ 1974 Chenowth 2RL #1244 Street Legal

See, and that's the thing - I did have it good n' hot. Way too hot to touch.
(Plus it was almost 100 degrees out yesterday).
So hot that the nut would spin the pinion bearing in the case before it would engage the flats!
It just kept going round n' round..!
AIGH!
I'm getting pissed off again just thinking about it a day later! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Right on, my man. Glad to hear it.
I done got in over my head again..
Like you said before,
Start with a good core and rebuild that.
Piecing together parts from different years isn’t for a beginner.
And this is supposed to be fun!
“Yeah, and i think we’re gonna have you come in on Sunday too”..

If it has been covered - disregard this.
But the fulcrum heights eyelet are different in the early and late center sections. This is important for setting the reverse gear. I machined an aluminum 'height gauge' that will point to the center of the eyelet for each type of case centers...early versus late.
Setting the reverse gear is not that complicated. You can probably set that w/ eyes closed. |

Earlys are typically around 1.500" Where lates usually come in at a 1.875" _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

Welp, I finally got this thing over to see Scott last Friday.
Had a great time there, really dig spending time with him and the crew.
And again i learned more about the art of gearbox…
First off i had the reverse adjusted a bit off.
Having deep reverse idler engagement isn’t as well important as making sure it clears the 1-2 slider.
I think he took the eye bolt 1/2 turn around as well.
I’m 98 3/4% positive i had it to spec, but sometimes it takes what it takes to get adjustment right.
Same with the 3-4 shift rail.
Because i have one late gear (4th) and one early gear (3rd) on a cut-down late hub,
There’s no way to know exactly which rail will work best.
Scott took out my late 3-4 rail with the hash line and stabbed an early.
That gave a better 3-4 adjustment without as much drag on the slider.
Aside from that, it looks like i had it.
None of these issues would have caused the binding.
He thinks i must have had the pinion nut in crooked not lined up to the flats in the case…
Either way, he liked my back-lash, but thought my liftoff was more than .012 and turned quite a bit stiff.
Not stiff enough to change the shims, but stiff enough that Trevor should run the good oil and change it within 500 or 1000 miles.
This is a box for a performance motor, so it’ll be set up tight.
Super super stoked to have Scott check my work.
Can’t tell you how much he’s helped.
What with sharing the wisdom and making us feel welcome,
Damon and i had a really good time there.
I’m really glad to have this opportunity.
Thanks again my man.
Trevor, we’ll see you in about a week. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Oh, yeah, that place is like Disneyland to a VW nut.
We cooked some skirt steak on the BBQ and some of the regulars were there for Friday afternoon festivities.
It’s a bunch of great people to spend time with.
Since we’re from Santa Cruz we had to leave a mark.
Like graffiti on a monument..!
