I have a 1988 Cabriolet that I have owned for about 15 years, and never
put the top down (long story). The top is in perfect condition and I
tried to put it down on a nice warm day so the material would be soft
and flexible.....but the mechanism was very, very stiff going down...so, I lubricate each and every hinge point, several times.....about 6 or 8 on each side....then I slowly worked it back and forth, lubed more, etc.,
etc.....I finally got it about 3/4 down and then it hit a "hard spot" that I did not want to past. One side feels like it would go the
distance, the other side stops hard. I pushed, but did not want to push
too hard. I have been looking for online advice, one site suggested that one, or both of the lift assist struts have frozen. I am wondering
if I remove the struts just to "exercise" the mechanism will I damage
anything. Can I operate the top without the struts in place? I have ordered new struts, but am wondering if I can take out the existing struts and operate the top without damaging the mechanism or
the fabric?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

Yes, you can remove the struts... whether you can operate the top without them in place will be based on your muscle capacity. Wink
