Blower also never worked, we all know what that means. I opted not to try the "mulendore port", figured might as well do the job right and pull the dash and replace the blower fan motor.
Im sure glad I did as the fan was completely frozen, adding lubricant would have not freed it. Also found the common mice nest inside the vents and at the heater core. Im glad the fan was frozen stuck and didnt blow that nasty nest residue through the vents. I ended up thoroughly cleaning the housing and vents inside and out.
Resealed heater flaps, blower fan, heater core etc and put it all back together.

Just to add to what I have seen are many off-season task and projects.
Quick update on a few things getting done.
Added a scangauge before camping season last year. So much nicer to view engine temps, rpm etc. 186 temp on scangauge puts temp needle slightly below red LED. My normal temps are 185-190. Van now read 122k miles, hard to believe based on how it looked at the beginning but thats actual mileage on body and trans (original 2.1 engine was torn apart by PO).
Since the harness I used thats built by Autoventures use a VSS emulator. Speed, trip data and MPG on scangauge was not accurate.
I ended up adding a actual speed sensor. I used the smallcar speed sensor as I liked the smaller hall sender. With small calibration this is working great as well.

I went with the 99" Pioneer series. The 180 degree one is nice, might require a 3rd bracket as its a bit heavier. _________________ 87 VW Westfalia - EJ25

My slow upload process continues....
I installed front and rear bilstein shocks (B4 version) that came with the van when I purchased it. I have been driving on these for a while now, they are not terrible but I plan to replace these soon as they are a bit too soft for my liking.
Replaced the original J-pipe with a nice stainless steel version.
When I replaced the trailing arm perches, I also added .5 spacers to even ride height. Nice and level now.
Also added a CVT awning - using RMW gutter brackets (slight modification needed to bolt, as its meant for ARB awning).

The all too common rear trailing arm spring perches. Like many these were rusted out.
I looked at several options for these - gowesty, burley, vancafe etc
I settled for the Van Cafe as those had the spring indentation. These turned out to be the JP group ones....I dont think indentation matters if you have aftermarket springs, but I still have the stock ones.

Yes, this is a must.
Next up was finishing installing a new tent, I have to remember to take more photos during the process.

Haven't updated this in a while. Thought I would continue to add some more pics of progress.
Picked up some mercedes wheels and obtained mounting hardware from T3.
Pressed in new studs and painted hub.
Dont have many pics of brakes, but rebuilt original calipers and had rotors turned. Replaced brake lines - dont have any pics but had to cut and re-flare brake lines as originals were rusted out.

While waiting for parts to come in… windows were tinted and installed new window seals. Went with west coast metric - not a big fan of their front windshield seal and rear hatch window was a huge pain to install but got it in without damaging the tint.

Holy Toledo, this looks like a fun project. Am I seeing correctly that this is a total repaint from Pastel White to Flash Silver Metallic? Savannah Beige Metallic? Something else?
|
Respray of original Flash Silver Metallic. When purchased it had primer, so I kept original color. Didn’t want to deal with respraying interior, plus I really like Flash Silver Metallic.

Yes, let us know when you do. This allow to test the redrill of the clevis to ensure correct fluid volume. _________________ 87 VW Westfalia - EJ25

How about the clutch pedal mod for that smallcar bellhousing? |
I just used the clutch spacer smallcar provides, its been working fine and personally dont mind the clutch feel.
Did you ever get your issue resolved? I remember your post below that it still overextended the slave.
I think it overextended the slave because the clutch disc was new and the pressure-plate fingers start 'farther in' which means the slave 'start point' is 'farther out'. And then a proper 'amount' of fluid can over-extend the slave.
Whereas on my other van, the clutch disc was 40,000 miles old.
So the old clutch disc did not need the spacer.
But on the other van (new clutch) the new disc is thicker so it needs the spacer.
You can bet I'm putting the spacer on the old van now!
Does this make sense?
The spacer still limits the amount of fluid.
But the pedal modulates much better within that stroke.

Here is a related problem I worked on with someone else, but I can't recall who it was or what forum.
I think the guy installed a disc that was too thick and it caused the slave to over-extend.
To make sense of this you have to 'read it in the sequence' of the circled numbers.
If the disc is too thick, it can set the diaphagm spring on the pressure plate too far 'down' which in turn causes the slave start position to be too far extended.
Where a normal amount of fluid drives the slave past its limit.
So the takeaway here is, for the concentric slave/bearing, do NOT use a disc that's too thick.
What we need is a "pressure plate finger depth measurement" that ensures the slave won't be over-extended.
I hope this is understood.
It's not easy to type this problem with clarity.
The key is --- the slave bearing riding on the pressure plate fingers is 'the start point' of the slave cylinder extension.
If it starts too far extended, it will be driven past the stops. _________________
