I've just pulled the trigger on on this Bus. I really don't know too much about him, He's a 67 Kombi, that we believe came from the USA to UK a few years ago, and was restored in about 2012. I have already sent off for the Birth Certificate, so hope fully more information on it's way.
He's called Barney, and has I'm told done quite a few Wedding gigs in his life here.
Now, he's not the best Bus in the world, but he's now mine ( just arranged transport to get him to me next week) and I will update the thread as I start to work on him.
As I said, I have very little information, but I do have receipts for works carried out by the PO in the last year for $20k, including dual MC and all new pipes and to include Willwood front disc conversion, Lite Steer power assisted steering, Split charge Leisure battery system, and a completely refreshed interior.
And most of all, it was just on my budget.
Yes he has lots of imperfections, but he's going to get well looked after, and much improved

I had asked the PO to send me a photo of the M Code plate, and sent him a photo that I borrowed from here on the Samba on where he should look
He sent me this back, as the plate was not visible, and had been carpeted over, so I will have to remove carpet to find it and re-fix back afterwards
Obviously the VIN plate was present, as as in another post, I suspect the bus was originally Velvet ?
It does have a fridge for drinks though

I hope the seller at least "threw in" on the deal at least one knee pad and shin guard for your right leg. Otherwise, that's probably the first "accessory" you'll want to add before you learn the hard way.
Safari windows and carpet on the floors. I'd remove that carpet at least in the front before the first proper car wash and see what happens before it happens.
Otherwise, glad you are happy about it and welcome to the Fold! _________________ Never argue with an Idiot. They'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. |

Thanks guys
It’s taken some time to finally come over to the ‘Dark Side’ and get a Bus 😂
We dearly love our Bug ‘Jules’ we go to shows, not for trophies or anything, but because we love the VW family cameraderie, where everyone is accepted whether you have a Rat/Patina/OG/or Concours.
We want to travel further afield, even over into Europe, hence the LHD, and really looking forward to packing a few bits and pieces, and our dog Lottie, and having some new adventures 🙏😀 which having a Bug is not really practical. We’ll never get rid of Jules, and hopefully over the next year or so our Bus Barney will also become one of the family
Here’s Jules
Here’s an older shot of Barney in his wedding outfit 🤣🤣

You sent him the correct pic but he sent you a photo of the wrong side of the Bus. He sent the left side but the plate is on the right side.
It does look like that could be Velvet Green underneath the VIN plate. _________________ How to Post Photos

Looks like it was a OTW camper. Looking at the headliner and that it was a Kombi. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Welcome to the club! Looks like a nice bus that was taken care of. Looks cool. I have a '67 also.
Another place to look for a Chassis/VIN # is in the engine compartment. Look in the area just to the left of the battery. There is a diagonal split with a screw to help hold the two mating panels which is the floor of the compartment. Just beyond that split should be a stamped chassis #. Sometimes it is painted over or even worse not present because metal work was done. Also, hopefully you will find the bus's plate behind the carpet. Good luck with your bus.

Hi there
It's called 'Lite Steer' it's Power Assisted Steering for a Bus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV8mf4Jfjts
At very low speeds, it makes steering with one hand possible _________________ 1966 VW Beetle ‘Jules’

So Gents
The questions start 😂
I have sent off for the Birth Certificate this week, which apparently can take upwards of 8 weeks now ? Cost was approximately $130?
I suppose the BC will confirm what colour the Kombi was originally? In the meantime, if the VIN plate was masked when the Bus went all white, what’s the best guess on its original livery ? I’ve looked at stock photos and wondered if all Velvet ? Velvet with white roof ? Or what ? Just hoping the BC will confirm definitively
I don’t think it was white over velvet though 😢

The green air box and the fact it’s a Kombi means it was all Velvet. AFIK VW didn’t paint splits with just a white roof, though that could have been done later by the company that did the camper conversion.
Because it’s likely a OTW camper there won’t be anything on the birth certificate about whether or not it really was an OTW conversion. It will just state that it was a Kombi the color, and whatever Mcoded it had. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

That overhead looks very much like a 1967 Sundial. The wood grain is called photo-finish.
Does it have a white circular dome light in the middle strip of the cargo part? |

That big white tube on the steering column reminds me of Mac’s work-out bike on “Always sunny in Philadelphia” |

So at last !!
Barney is with me. It was hauled over to me from London today, and just been offloaded, I skipped out from work to meet the Haulier, and had a quick drive
I really need to go over it in detail now it's here, and already can see a lot of things that need doing. But, Hey Ho, he's mine now, sent off for registration document, and insured him. There's a local VW Cruise out this Sunday, so definitely want to go

I’m after some help/advice
I’m stoked with the Kombi. He’s running really well, gear change is good and bus pulls really well
I’ve taken a few photos just now of the Engine, and would like to know from you guys what I’m dealing with here ? AD engine?
Cheers
