There are two ways I could go with this car. The background is it's a very early (number 16 of 10000 ish) '36 Steyr 50 found in a scrapyard and deemed too far gone to restore by the Steyr club. It was built onto a late VW chassis for a Spa meeting where it quite rightly caused a stir.
Personally I'm torn with what to do with it. I always love Bob Shail's 39 original and I could build it up on a 40's chassis just like Kohlruss would have. But is that a valid thing to do, or is it a bit too jurassic park?
My other option is embrace it's recent modification and fit it with the later waserboxer engine, after all there's a rad grill.
Why am I asking? Well, a Kohlruss rep would not be cheap and at the end would it even be a valid car? This is the place to gauge opinion.

Apparently the Steyr Club has never looked at The Samba, because as we have all seen, especially in the barndoor forum, nothing is ever too far gone to restore, and judging from the photos, it would apply to this "Baby" as well.

Perhaps a third choice should be offered for restoring the Steyr as a proper Steyr, because if it were No. 16 of any VW series, I doubt we would be debating whether or not to slam it on earlies.

A compromise idea might be to ditch the VW pan and configure it as a "proper" Steyr, but as a resto-mod. The original Steyr had a front-mounted wasserboxer engine, driving a swingaxle rear end.

Whatever you ultimately decide, good luck with it!!

since we are throwing out options....

i would consider a thing drivetrain, make it look like it is on a kuebel chassis.

waterboxer only if you already have one.

Personally, i would just fix what you got.

I do have Kubel running gear in stock and an option on a rough 40’s chassis. But then what would it be? An expensive modern recreation of a non standard hybrid Confused

Looks better at stock height.

Lowering everything just makes everything look ordinary. Same old modifications etc... (just my opinion)
