They work great and are very durable. However, they are also heavy and VERY itchy. They stay itchy throughout their lifetime since they never stopped shedding fiberglass hairs. They can also be tricky to clamp up and stay in place because some fiberglass blankets are very stiff. I'm a collision tech by trade and we use felt welding blankets. They cost a little more (Amazon advertises a 4x6 blanket for $67.50 today), but they are so much more comfortable to work with. They are lightweight stay in place very well with $.99 spring clamps and they also drape easily over objects you want to protect. The only downfall I see with them is that they can be cut easier than fiberglass blankets and prolonged sparks from grinding will damage them quicker than fiberglass. Both problems can be overcome with good planning though. Worth the money and no itching. |

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear bc I don't like fiberglass for obvious reasons.

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

You're welcome. I'm glad to help and that looks like a nicer blanket that you linked than the $67 one I saw this morning. Have fun! |

I do a lot of welding professionally and own a ton of different welding blankets. The fiberglass are fine for general spark control, but not something you want to work on, or lay over something nice. The glass will shed, just like insulation and it is extremely itchy.
The carbon fiber is excellent, but be warned: A good hot chunk of weld splatter can burn through once in a while. With decent prep and someone watching for sparks you should be ok.... but they're not 100% foolproof. That said, I've used the carbon fiber to protect an original headliner while I welded up rust holes in a bus roof. We stuffed the carbon fiber pad up in there and had someone holding it in place. Pretty amazing, and not nearly as heavy as the fiberglass.

I have that blanket and use it occasionally. As mentioned... it sheds, a lot. Definitely don't want to lie on it. _________________ Robert in Memphis

Thanks scrivyscriv I may buy both and report back later as I have an area that I don't want damaged with heat/spark.
