Hi all,

I'm preparing my bug for reinstallation of her rebuilt engine. I ended up replacing the entire throwout assembly (fork, bushings, clutch cable arm) because the old bearing was way off-center, the bushings were thrashed, and the arm was seized to the fork. I also replaced the clutch cable and Bowden tube.

When reinstalling the cable to the arm, I had to push the arm forward quite a bit to catch the threads with the wingnut. With the wingnut on, the arm is now pitched forward about 10-15 degrees or so from where it was sans cable, and the throwout fork now has about a pinky finger of clearance from the back of the bell housing, whereas it was against the bell housing without the cable. Is this normal or is my cable too short? The cable is the exact same length as the old one, but the new Bowden tube, cable arm, and fork may be a bit out of spec and causing issues.

A few pics for reference:

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I think it's ok. You will need to adjust it further once you install the engine and clutch - in order to get the appropriate ~20mm of play at the pedal.

Without the motor plugged in, no way of telling.

Might be too much bow in your bowden tube.

You could put a straight edge across the bell housing and measure in to the throw out bearing. And measure the distance the clutch pack sits proud of the case, compare the measurements.

I agree with Cusser, that Boden tube does not look right

Thx! There are two thick shims on the tube currently, carried over from the old one. I will remove these and see if that gives me enough thread to get the wingnut on without pitching the arm forward. I didn't check, but it's possible the new Bowden is a tad longer.

Use a string or visulize a straight line between the body and the trans bracket for the boden tube, when the bowden tube is installed there should be about 3/4" of bend in the tube, no more than an 1".

The clips holdng the throw out bearing will fail as you need the other style.

Seems like the wrong length clutch cable. The length varied through the years.

The T O bearing sits off center just a bit.
