Today I went to my friend's house to show his daughter how to drive his 74 Super Autostick. He's pretty sick and she wants to drive it in our local Holiday parade.

She started the car and it runs great, but she tells me it needs gas because the "gas" light is on. I tell her there is no gas light, so she shows me. I told her it the "generator" light and a tap of the gas makes it go out.

Also had to show her that you have to push down on the shifter to move it into PARK.

The car needed some air in the tires, but for not being driven for 9 months,,, it runs great.

A good deed! Well done! Along the same lines in an informal poll of about 100 students, only about 10 had ever had to manually roll up or down the windows in a car!

I think we're driving pretty old vehicles and curiosity abounds. There isn't a week that goes by that I don't hear the usual comments...what years is it...I like your car...what mileage do you get, etc.

If they're over 50 then they have a story they have to tell. If they're under 50 their curiosity takes over.

It was only yesterday an older lady and gentleman pull up along side me in a parking lot. They lady said she loved the sound of the old Beetle and she hadn't heard one in years. The gentleman followed up with, "I like your car."

I said thank you like usual and walked in the store.

Ooops ! My 1970 VW, my 1971 VW, my 1988 Mazda truck, and my 1998 Frontier all have roll up windows, I like 'em.

My 2004 Frontier has power windows/power locks, which means no lock cylinder on the passenger door, I don't like that. Same with Mrs. Cusser's Yukon.

Come on, kids freak out if the car doesn't have WiFi.

I remember my step son saying, “imagine a car without air conditioning “. I said, “yeah, most cars I’ve owned”.

My air conditioning consists of turning my wing windows out. Works until about 93 degrees then just starts blowing hot ass air.

I have no doubt that my grandfather would have thought it funny if I didn't know how to drive a Model-T.

Google all the pedals you had to operate on those babies. Damn!

Actually, my grandfather knew how to hitch up a sled, or buggy, to a horse in the year 1900. I don't think he would have thought it funny that I couldn't do the same in the year 2000, or 2022.

I think my daughter was one of the only ones in her high school graduating class that could drive a manual transmission

Its not just the young people. When my wife's battery went dead in the school car line half of the people around her were amazed she had jumper cables and knew how to use them. I think all of them would have called someone to fix it.

True story, my 13 yo son was baffled on how to roll the windows down in my 73. I felt like I failed him as a parent.

Yes; both my daughters were the only ones; even the boys couldn't drive their shared 6-year-old Frontier.

My 2 VWs and 3 small trucks are all 4-cylinder, manual transmission models. Mrs. Cusser has a 2014 Yukon as she tows horses sometimes.

Model Ts are a joy to drive, but their design and oddities do make for some good laughs when I have my friends around.

And you have to advance/retard the ignition manually.

And the key doesn’t start the engine either.
Of course, the best laugh I had was asking a car mechanic friend to identify the water pump…

I had the same experience with my son. Except I had asked him to roll the window up when we stopped at the store. He looked around at the door and asked where the button was..

Even after I showed him how to operate the crank, the motion was foreign to him, and he made the operation look difficult. Like a 40 year old using chopsticks for the first time.

So, after this parent fail, I showed him how to shift, and he does a pretty decent job from the passenger seat.

just over at a buddys shop last week and watched his son try to start a barely running 70's Ford pickup with his foot firmly on the brake and not touching the gas pedal at all...after about the 8th try we were "step on the gas...pump it... feather it to keep it running " etc etc...and his son's been working at his shop for years...and is married...so no idea how this skill has evaded him for this long

I remember in the 1990s the neighbor kid and his friend came over with a can, after his mom's electric can opener conked out.
He was amazed when I used ours, had never seen one like it.

Yea, WAY too modern, he might not be familiar with a phone you don't have to crank.

Where do I dial the number? Man I've got a phone with a real metal bell inside of it, and I thought that was ancient..
