Hi Guys, just bought my first Beetle. Completely rust free California car. I have a lot to learn. The gentleman I bought if from had all the maintenance records from his local shop. The one thing that puzzles me is on one repair order. Customer reports fuel smell while car in garage. Shop suspected the fuel line was bad in tunnel. The way it was repaired was to run a copper fuel line underneath the car secured to the pan from the tank to the engine. Is doing it the right way that difficult? This is the first think I want to try to undo.
Thank you!

Copper line is no go item. It gets brittle.

That is what confuses me. The car was well maintained. Why would they do this. How hard is it to run proper line through the tunnel. Does the interior have to come out or something. Thank you |

No repair is not that hard in fact running the line inside the car alongside the tunnel passenger side is outlined in Bentley manual with all pics and measurements. I can source a steel line here through tubing supply that’s better than stock. Not best lighting looks like this

Nice looking bug. Congratulations.
My 64 had a bypass fuel line on the underside of the pan. (Standard rubber line so at least yours is metal ) I went back and checked the internal fuel line and it was fine. Checked it by air pressure and then i filled it up with liquid and checked the level over time. It was in good shape. Have had gas in it now for 6 months without any smell.
What i did find is my gas sender was bad and causing the gas smell. You may want to double check yours and every other part of the fuel system as maybe it was mis-diagnosed.
Otherwise not sure you could to the job without cutting into the tunnel. I do wonder if it could be routed like the brake line inside the cab under the floor mats but that may not be ideal either. Here's a thread showing how one guy replaced the fuel line in the tunnel: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=380724&highlight=fuel+line
And here's a page from the shop manual dealing with the same issue:

That looks like a great solution to the problem. |

This is correct, but the OP has speculated it is copper. How does he know?
It could be Cunifer (Copper-Nickel-Iron) tubing which IS recommended for brake fluid or fuel.
I any case I'd rather a brittle externally run fuel line than a badly installed in cabin or in tunnel line. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

This is the only bummer on the car. A somewhat well known air cooled repair shop did this.

Aaaah, it's a little hacky, but at least it looks pretty much tucked up out of danger, at least from that pic. I'd almost be more tempted to extricate that cheezy chrome Chinese fan shroud, that's a major piece of junk on such a beautiful car. And that chrome firewall should come right out at the same time.
P.S. my advance apologies for sounding so harsh and coming off like a jerk. I just wish I could've given my two cents to the person who installed that chrome on your engine before they actually did it...that's heresy on that car
P.S. #2: pardon me, I meant sacrilege, not heresy _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom) 😏

I wouldn't bust on them too hard, that one photo looks pretty decent. It is not terribly difficult to replace the tunnel fuel line. I've done it once on a 1968 with the coiled mild steel 1/4" tubing you can get from any parts store. Snaking it into the frame horn takes a little work but it's doable. _________________ Robert in Memphis

I got a pile of parts with the car, including new steel fuel line in a coil. I would like to do it the right way. Trying to wrap my head around how. _________________ 1965 Beetle, 1970 1600cc DP 60HP, 12v |
