I have a 67 Bug.

My speedo needs replacing. Should I refurbish it or go with new?

Also, are there dash lights that are supposed to light up the gauges?

Good idea to replace the gas gauge at the same time?

Depends alot on what you are going after look wise. Stock or custom.

Bug Speedo's are not too hard to find that look good. They are also easy to take apart and clean up if you are into fixing your own stuff. Hardest part is getting the chrome ring off. From there you can clean and replace the color CEL lenses and the needle. Those parts are available.

There are a few light bulbs in the back of the housing to illuminate the pod. These are connected to your light switch.

There are also a few more for the other functions like oil pressure, generator and turn sig) All bulbs are accessed from behind the dash.

Gas gage i cannot speak for on a 67. If it is like a 64 then the gage itself comes apart but not as easy as the speedo and the actual needle can be fragile.

If your talking about the sender then someone else will have to chime in.

Why does the speedometer need replacing? As already mentioned, it is very easy to take apart and clean. If the colored gels have disintegrated, you can replace those. I bought 10 cent plastic folders and cut out pieces for mine.
If the speedometer is not working, have you verified that the speedometer cable is connected in the back and to the left front wheel?

If gas gauge is working, then I would just leave it alone. If it is not, verify that the cable to the sender is connected.

In 1967 there was only one bulb in the speedometer housing for night lighting, and one in the fuel gauge. (in 1968 they would increase the speedometer lighting to two bulbs). But for any of those to work, you have to twist the headlight switch knob to vary the amount of power sent to them, which is mentioned in the Owner's Manual (image below)

The mechanical fuel gauge is not intended to be dismantled and is about impossible to put back together if you get it all the way apart. So don't go there. However you can pry off the faceplate if it needs cleaning on the internal side.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.
