Dear Sambas ;o)

I would like to know more about the history of my sunny yellow, slightly dented Westy and would like to ask for help of the Samba family.

What have I found out already? Unfortunately not thaaaaaat much yet. (Thanks to John Tauxe for your kind help and friendly contact!!)

- Typ: 231961
- VIN: 2362154393
- L20A Marinogelb
- Last day of production: 11.06.1976 in Hannover
- Sold at 16.07.1976 in Los Angeles
- 1982 Boulder / Colorado, serviced at „Modern Specialists“, 2940 Valmont Rd. (see service sticker and Firefighter sticker)
- 2007 New Mexiko
- 2008 Los Alamos, the car was named Cassandra . Colin Kellog worked on it and got the engine running.
- 2009 – 2016 Mesa - Phoenix/Arizona.
- 2016 – Knobi International - Phoenix
- 2018 - Island of Rügen – Germany

What do you think?
What service dealers were in Los Angeles in 1976? I know Volkswagen of Downtown, Volkswagen Santa Monica...
Maybe someone knows the car or has ideas how I can find out more...?!?

Was there also a husky service station in Boulder?

Maybe someone is now shouting very loudly... "Yes... that was my crazy hippie father's or grandpa’s car... Very Happy

A needle in a haystack…

Thanks and greetings

Peter

Los Angeles would have been the Port of Entry. It could have been sold by about any dealer in the LA area which even at that time was about 100 miles x 100 miles wide. It has been out of the California DMV system too long for there to be any records. We had a large outflow of people from California to Colorado back in the 1980's.

By the looks of things you already have a lot of history for this vehicle with all the stickers and labels.
Most vehicles loose their history now after 5 years, 46 years is a big ask.

John rescued Cassandra and sold her to someone in AZ. That’s a good provenance right there

Oh...thanks for the information. That doesn't make research any easier. Rather impossible...

Husky was a major Canadian energy company that also operated more than 1.000 gas stations across the United States. Maybe also in Boulder? The dealer on the service sticker is AEIHesl...? Which dealer will it have been?!?

Yes that's right. John was very helpful. I wrote to the last owner in Mesa Phoenix - AZ several times, but unfortunately got no answer. That's a pity, but okay. From 2009 to 2016 the car only drove 21,500 miles.

I had forgotten how rough the bus looked, sitting in my driveway. That's my light brown board-and-batten house in the photos.

That could be 121,500. I racked close to 16,000 miles in my Bay in a 2 month period once.

Wow, amazing how far this bus has traveled. Ironically John and I emailed about this bus back in the spring of 2009 when he was fixing it up, I would have loved to have bought it at that time but just couldn't work out the details to get it here 2000 miles away. I did provide the Search & rescue sticker for John then as well - glad to see it's still hanging in there.
(I do still have shirts & stickers, check my ads for details)
Glad to see it's still on the road and keeping the Fahrvergnugen going! Good luck finding more details,
Smile

It was there when Cathy and I visited in 2009 or so. I knew I had seen it somewhere. At John's.

This was six days before my 30-year association with the Road Warrior would end in Colorado.

John, my memory is sorely taxed with all the Marinogelb Westies that have graced Los Alamos. I have caught what I hope are photographs of Cassandra in the scrum ... and what do you know, I now have a Marinogelb Westy.

Yes, Colin, those are the pix.

RIP the Road Warrior.

I recall that on the morning of her pickup, you and I took out this non-running bus and basically whipped it into running condition with fresh gas and a few trips around the block. We got it running minutes before the new owner showed up. He really lucked out, because I had sold him a non-running bus and he left with a running bus.

At the time I had two marinogelb (L20A) Westies and one marinogelb77 (L21H). The color difference was subtle but there is a difference.
